As part of the Owen Jr. Fair events and the celebration of Owen’s 100th anniversary as a city, a “golden” rail spike was hidden in town. Clues were given for three weeks. Searchers were out and about, but unable to locate the spike. At 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning September 6, searchers interested in winning the $100 prize money showed up at the Fair’s food stand for the “final clue.” Then they were off and running to reach the location of the spike. The lucky winner was first grader, Kai Dohrwardt. Kai, along with his mother Billie Sternitzky, found the spike under the cushion of an old rocking chair in the entry of the white apartment building on Main Street (the former hardware store). They had been searching everywhere, and were determined not to give up! Thirty seconds behind Kai came third grader, Brody Hoyt, along with his mother, Nikkii Hoyt. They, too, had been searching for three weeks. Brody had mentioned to his mother several times during their “hunting” to look in the apartment entry, but mom said that it was most likely outside somewhere. Mom says she’ll listen better to Brody’s “hunches” next year. Brody demonstrated excellent sportsmanship by congratulating Kai on finding the spike.
The final clue:
Across from the post office…the building is white.
A 100-year-old property that’s a beautiful sight.
People dwell in it. Enter and enjoy.
Respect the tenants. Do not annoy.
Under the cushion. Amid cobwebs and dust.
A 100-year-old chair to admire and trust.
Do you now have the spike safety in hand?
If so, you’re the winner and feeling quite grand!
