Art Petersen recognized for his service

This past week, family and friends had two opportunities to join Art Petersen as he was recognized for his service to his country in honor of his 100th birthday.

On Wednesday, May 14, Art received a Quilt of Valor. Art served in the Army from 1949-1951 as a supply clerk. He attained the rank of Sergeant. He was stationed in Hawaii. A Quilt of Valor is presented to a veteran in recognition of their service to the nation. The quilt was presented by Marsha Otto and Marla Berg.

As part of the presentation the following was read: “This quilt brings you a three-part message from our hearts. First, we HONOR you for your service. We honor you for leaving all that you held dear to serve and protect. Second, to let you know that FREEDOM is not free. The cost of our freedom is the dedication of servicemen like you, so this quilt is our way to say THANK YOU for your sacrifice. And finally, this quilt is meant to offer COMFORT to you. There is no other quilt like yours. In recognition for your service to protect us and the United States of America it is with great privilege we present you with your Quilt of Valor. Thank you for allowing us to recognize you. THANK YOU for your service and WELCOME HOME.”

On Monday, May 19, Art celebrated his 100th birthday. As part of the celebration, he was presented with a plaque and coin from the Veterans Administration. The presentation took place at the Owen VA Clinic.
