Blackhawks lose to Solon Springs

Posted

The Blackhawks season came to an unfortunate end in the Sectional finals Saturday night in Ashland, as they lost a hard fought game by a final of 59-41, as the Hawks' offense went cold toward the end and Solon Springs was able to take advantage and advance to state.
Solon Springs and Owen-Withee both played strong defense throughout the game as the Hawks were led by junior Colin Fritz, as he was able to find the bottom of the net for the Hawks early, scoring the Hawks first seven points of the game. Senior Quinn Hatlestad was able to pry loose in the first half, scoring six points. Fritz would hit a pair of threes in the half and score a total of 15 first half points helping the Hawks keep it close as they trailed 29-23 at the half.
Both teams would make small scoring runs in the second half as Mason Gay would hit a pair of threes and Vince Henke got loose for an inside hoop to help. A deep Hatlestad three and a Fritz drive cut the lead to three with eight minutes to go, but the Hawks' offense then went cold. Forced to foul late, Solon Springs made 8 of 10 free throws to prevent a Hawks comeback, earning a trip to state by a final of 59-41.
Box Score: Fritz 19; Hatlestad 11;, Gay 6; Sherwood 3; Henke 2.
Coach's Comments
I couldn't be prouder of this team. Yes, we are disappointed with the loss as the guys played with great confidence and expected to go to state. Solon Springs is a good team, and it just wasn't our night. The guys on this roster always play with heart and determination that our community should be proud of. We made a strong run through the tournament as all of the guys played a big role in our success and have nothing to hang their head about. I thank every player on this team for all of their hard work and effort throughout the season. To the parents, fans, community, and businesses that followed us all year and into the tournament, thank you.
I also want to thank our three seniors that were very important to our team for the last 4+ years, Vince Henke, Quinn Hatlestad and Ryan Nelson. These three young men are not only great individuals with outstanding character, but also great teammates that all lead in some way or another on the basketball court. They will be truly missed by everyone in the program. Thank you guys for all that you have done.
