95 Years Ago – August 22, 1929

The Midway Cheese Factory, four miles east of the city was totally destroyed by fire at noon today, also the home of Ted Domer, owner of the factory. The fire started from a defective chimney on the residence, where a fire in the kitchen range had been started. The Midway factory had not been making cheese for several months, but had been used as a receiving station for whole milk, which was skimmed.

85 Years Ago – August 24, 1939

At a meeting of the school board held this week two important business matters were decided upon. The first being that the two school buses are to receive a new coat of paint to meet the demands of the law recently introduced by Assemblyman H.C. Schenk of Madison and supported by commercial travelers and signed by Governor Heil. The law requires that all school buses be painted in three brilliant colors of red, white and blue.

75 Years Ago – August 25, 1949

At an early hour Monday morning two business places in the Village of Withee were broken into by robbers. The total loot realized from the two places is estimated at about $100, with practically all of this amount being taken from the Withee Farmer Store. The other place entered was the Withee Garage.

65 Years Ago – August 20, 1959

While tarring the roof of his tavern, known as the Wagon Wheel, a week ago yesterday afternoon, Charlie Rahn slipped and fell 10 feet from the roof of the building to the ground and suffered a severe back injury.

Students, former students, and friends of W.K. Doonan gathered Sunday night at the high school auditorium in tribute to his 27 years of service in this community as head of the public school system.

55 Years Ago – August 21, 1969

Given in marriage by her father, Miss Nancy Jean Rowe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byrl E. Rowe, became the bride of Bennie L. Leonard Jr., son of Mr. ands Mrs. Bennie L. Leonard Sr. of Pleasant Plains, Arkansas.

45 Years Ago – August 22, 1979

When Owen-Withee high school students return to school for the 1979-80 school term on Wednesday morning, August 22, they will be met and greeted by a new high school principal, J. Terry Downen, who was just recently hired by the O-W school board.

35 Years Ago – August 24, 1989

A large and interested group of citizens of Green Grove held an informational meeting at the Green Grove Town Hall Wednesday evening, August 16, 1989. The meeting was called by the Citizens Committee for the purpose of discussing and learning about the different means of disposing of their garbage due to the impending closure of their town landfill on September 16, 1989.

25 Years Ago – August 25, 1999

Miss Clark County 1999 is Dawn Boening, former Miss Withee, sponsored by the O-W Lions Club. Dawn is the first Miss Clark County to come from the Owen-Withee area since Sandy Issacs (Shimono) held that title back in 1970.

Mr. Bob Houts has taken over the responsibility of Owen-Withee High School Superintendent beginning in July since Jim Friesen sat down for his final school board meeting on Monday, July 29.
