105 Years Ago – October 11, 1919

Being unable to secure enough local women and girls to put up the beet pack at the Owen Canning Co. plant, 11 women have been hired who live in Thorp and come here on the morning train.

95 Years Ago – October 10, 1929

The J.C. Andrews residence property in this city has been sold to Dr. G.A. LeGault of Loyal. He plans to erect an addition to his new home which will be used as an operating room.

The Central Canning Co., with two factories at Colby and Dorchester, was sold to Libby, McNeil & Libby Co. of Chicago for $175,000 effective December 1.

85 Years Ago – October 12, 1939

Preliminary work to raise the grade and track of the Soo Line railway at Black River bridge, four miles west of Owen, was started yesterday. When it is completed the track level of the bridge will have been raised two feet.

The case between Dr. G.A. LeGault of the LeGault Hospital of Owen as plaintiff against the City of Owen, defendant, was heard today at Neillsville by Circuit Judge Cowie of the La Crosse district. The case involves a claim of $609.75 held against the city of Owen for hospitalization and doctor’s services rendered to a patient admitted to his hospital on January 21, 1939, suffering from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

75 Years Ago – October 13, 1949

65 Years Ago – October 8, 1959

On Sunday, October 4, at the morning worship service at Nazareth Lutheran Church, Withee, installation services were held for their new pastor, Rev. Beryl Knudsen, formerly of Sidney, MI.

Yesterday Mrs. J.P. Madsen was dismissed from St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, where she had been treated for severe facial injuries and cuts suffered when she stumbled on the curb of Central Avenue in front of Weddig’s Drug and then fell against the building. After being treated at the clinic she was sent to the hospital as it was feared that she may have gotten glass in her eye when her glasses broke.

55 Years Ago – October 9, 1969

Sheriff David Bertz said yesterday that his department has nothing definite to work on in the way of leads, or clues, pertaining to the Friday night break-in at Merten’s Implement at Withee. Merchandise and cash totaling almost $2,900 was reported taken.

Chauncey Coke, Eau Claire, Immediate Past Governor of the Wisconsin Kiwanis was the principal speaker at the Kiwanis meeting held Monday night commemorating the 25th charter night of the Owen Club.

45 Years Ago – October 10, 1979

There will be a Halloween dance on Thursday, October 25, 1979 for all Clark County Senior Citizens at the Owen elementary gym, starting at 7:30 p.m. The dance is being sponsored by the Owen Nutrition Center.

Miss Gloria Anderson and Harry M. Mitchell III were married during a 2 p.m. ceremony on September 29 at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Owen.

Mr. and Mrs. James Hatlestad are the parents of a son, Wade Ryan born on Thursday, October 4 at 1:47 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Little Wade weighed 9 pounds 12 ounces at birth and was 23 inches in length.

35 Years Ago – October 12, 1989

Bids for the demolition of the old elementary school at Owen were opened the afternoon of October 3, and David LaFontaine of Perry-Carrington Engineering met with the council that evening with the recommendation that the low bidder Haas Sons, Inc. receive the bid award of $22,449.

A new area business opened its doors and is known as Hebert’s Workshop. Dennis Hebert’s repair business is located at his home farm which is one-half mile south of Longwood on Highway 73. He is well qualified to repair tractors, TVs, radios, stereos, fencers, lawn and garden tractors and equipment and snowblowers, and is a service much needed in the area.

25 Years Ago – October 13, 1999

Dylan Jacob was born September 26, 1999 to Wally and Sherri Bogseth of Owen. He joins big brother Dustin, age 5. He weighed 7 pounds 9½ ounces and was 20 inches long.

15 Years Ago – October 14, 2009

Sue Lueth, Debbie Ojanpera and Melissa Jennings, manned the bake table at the New Harvest Church bake sale held at the Withee Mobil Mart. These ladies braved the cold working for a successful sale, so that all proceeds from the sale could be donated to Indianhead Food Pantry.

The O-W Booster Club welcomed the 1999 State Championship Football Team back with a 10-year anniversary celebration last Friday night. This 1999 team capped off a perfect 14-0 season with a 54-6 win over Mineral Point in the State Championship game at Camp Randall setting 11 Division V records in the process.
