105 Years Ago – March 4, 1920
Bids for the building of the new Owen High School were opened Monday. Wm. Weaver was given the job at $34,096.
Last Monday the Fairchild & Northwestern railroad quit business. The railroad was the property of N.C. Foster of Fairchild.
95 Years Ago – March 6, 1930
The Knights of Pythias are making arrangements to stage a minstrel show at the Idle Hour Theatre on March 18 and 19.
85 Years Ago – March 7, 1940
Principal of the Owen school system, W.K. Doonan met with the principals of the surrounding schools in a meeting held Tuesday evening at Colby for the purpose of pointing out some of the difficulties arising out of the transporting of school children by buses and reviewing some of the laws governing the transporting of students on buses.
75 Years Ago – March 9, 1950
Normal train operations will be resumed through Owen and other Soo Line railway terminals on Tuesday of next week. The announcement came today from railway officials, who announced that directives were sent out to all employees who had been affected by the month-long lay-off because of the nationwide coal strike to return to work today.
Justice D. Kasow, Neillsville, bound E.J. Senske, Humbird farmer, over to Circuit Court when he appeared before him on March 2 and pleaded guilty to a charge of rustling cattle.
A program of special homage was paid, especially to Mr. L.W. Cattanach, Sr. and his five sons by members of the Owen Masonic Lodge Monday night, when Walt presided as Worshipful Master of the lodge, with four of his sons sitting in the chair to raise his fifth and last son to his Third Degree. Such an occasion is indeed a rarity in Masonic circles.
65 Years Ago – March 10, 1960
A Dorchester woman and 14 juveniles from the Dorchester area appeared in Judge Lowell D. Schoengarth’s court Tuesday, March 2, for episodes that included beer drinking and power turns around the Village of Dorchester.
55 Years Ago – March 5, 1970
A broken heat lamp located near a fence housing feeder pigs in the barn of Clarence Olson was charged with being the cause of the fire call to that place at 4:30 Tuesday afternoon. Fire Chief Harry Dempsey said the lamp was apparently kicked and damaged by one of the feeder pigs. Damage was nil with some straw having to be thrown from the smoke damaged barn.
45 Years Ago – March 6, 1980
The Owen branch office of Time Federal Savings and Loan Association opened for business this week which is located at the corner of West Third and Harding Streets next to the Mill Pond.
Gilbert Hardy of Withee, celebrated his 90th birthday last Sunday, March 2, 1980. He was honored with a birthday party at the home of his daughter, Eleanor DeMoss, where he makes his home.
35 Years Ago – March 8, 1990
Mr. and Mrs. Don Kohn of Withee announce the engagement of their daughter, Brenda to Chris Alger, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Alger, Thorp. A September 1 wedding is being planned.
25 Years Ago – March 8, 2000
The O-W Girls Basketball Team ended their season Thursday night in the Regional Semi-Finals at Athens. However, Morgan Mitchell scored 20 points to go over the 1,000 point mark for her career. She is the 6th girl in school history to reach that mark.
The Produce Auction Barn located on County Hwy O just off County Hwy X and Hwy 29 is scheduled to be in working order by the middle of April. The barn is set on a five acre plot, it is a metal pole structure with a 6,000 sq. ft. auction floor. Elam Shirk explained they would like to have an 80x100 acre produce production. This would include individual growing plots. May 11 is scheduled for the first auction at the newly completed auction barn.
A daughter, Sierra Lynn was born to Mark and Tammy Renderman, Thursday, March 2, 2000. Little Sierra was born at Memorial Hospital of Taylor County, Medford weighing 6 lbs. 12 oz. and was 19” long.
15 Years Ago – March 10, 2010
Al Guthman’s coaching career in Owen-Withee started in the fall of 1976. He started coaching girls basketball and remains the girls coach 34 years later. After Guthman and his Lady Hawks beat Loyal last week he became tied for the state record for most wins by a Wisconsin Girls Basketball coach with his 587th win.
Marshfield Clinic Owen Dental Center will be closing Friday, April 9. Patients will be able to obtain dental care nearby through the Clinic’s dental centers in Neillsville and Medford, and later this year in Marshfield.
