95 Years Ago – April 10, 1930

The International Petroleum Co. of Chicago, let a contract this week for the building of a bulk service station here. The new tanks will be situated on the Soo Line tracks, near those of the Cities Service Co.

85 Years Ago – April 11, 1940

The Lone Pine Cheese Factory, 2½ miles south and 6 miles west of Withee, owned and operated by Frank Meske, recently installed a complete new locker service for its patrons and the public in general. The new Frigidaire locker service has 70 large lockers which are rentable to the public. A large cooling room for the handling of whole, half or quarters of beef and pork is also available.

The Owen and Abbotsford high schools were the victims of early Monday morning robbers as indicated by the tracks in the fresh snow which started falling about 5 a.m. Monday morning. The offenders of law made their way through three locked doors in the local school building and entered the desk of Principal Doonan and the top drawer of the steel filing cabinet where they found a sum of money amounting to a little over $50. The same procedure was followed at Abbotsford where they also jimmied a safe as well as the desk and filing cabinet but were not as well repaid for their efforts as their loot amounted to but a few dollars.

75 Years Ago – April 13, 1950

The Duke and Duchess of Windsor made a crowd of 150 persons especially happy by defying the bitter cold Easter Sunday winds to come out on the observation platform of their special car when their train stopped here Sunday noon. They even went as far as to pose for candid camera fans, as well as signing several autographs.

65 Years Ago – April 14, 1960

Carol Marie Poirier, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Graham Poirier of rural Owen, died at 2:30 a.m. March 29 in St. Mary’s Hospital at Wausau, where she was admitted Sunday evening after suffering a stroke while tobogganing at Perkinstown.

Leonard Himes, 25, of route 1, Owen, has been named Clark County forestry administrator, and has assumed his new duties.

Ralph Weidman Jr., boatswain’s mate third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Weidman Sr. of route 1, Owen, took part in a huge amphibious landing exercise, March 22, on Formosa’s southern coast, while serving aboard the tank landing ship USS Tioga County.

55 Years Ago – April 9, 1970

The Owen-Withee Board of Education and the Owen-Withee Education Association have reached agreement of their 1970-1971 salary schedule. On March 31 the Board of Education ratified the agreement and on April 2 the association ratified it.

The car went down at 1:16 p.m. on April 5, 1970. The winning ticket was held by Rich Boie of Thorp. Rich had a ticket for April 5, 1970 at 1:12 p.m.

45 Years Ago – April 10, 1980

Applications for the position of Director of Public Works are now being taken by the city of Owen, The Director of Public Works will be a new full-time position with the city, and the person who is accepted for that position will be responsible for all public works in the city, with the exception of the Fire Department and Police Department.

Clark County again has an official district attorney. He is Darwin Zwieg, and was appointed to that post in the last week in March by Governor Lee Dreyfus.

35 Years Ago – April 12, 1990

Mr. and Mrs. Gary Hoffman of Withee announce the engagement of their daughter Karen to Chris Tyznik, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Tyznik of Lublin. An August 14 wedding is planned.

25 Years Ago – April 12, 2000

On March 28 at approximately 5:15 a.m. Mr. James Hughes was traveling eastbound on CTH H, approximately seven miles west of CTH K in Clark County near the Panther Creek bridge when he observed what he described to be a large creature, approximately eight feet tall, step off the roadway and go into the ditch. He estimated the creature to be in excess of 500 pounds and walking on two legs. Mr. Hughes also advised he felt it was carrying something in its arms, possibly the carcass of a goat. Mr. Hughes stated this creature appeared to have a grayish colored hair all over its body.

15 Years Ago – April 14, 2010

Terra Brost, who is an ad consultant here at the O-W Enterprise, started the Owen-Withee group on Facebook last Thursday. By Saturday there were 129 members and as of Monday there were 211.

Chief Deputy Jim Backus of the Clark County Sheriff’s Department showed the Incident Command Vehicle bought in 2004 with Homeland Security funding in Owen-Withee.
