95 Years Ago – April 17, 1930
A new clubhouse for the golf course has been placed on the grounds the past week and workmen will soon begin to put it into shape for use. The building was formerly used as a dining car in the woods by the John S. Owen Lumber Co.
A.J. Olson, local manager of the O&N Lumber Co., has just received word from the head offices of the company at Menomonie that his company is now prepared to finance the building of homes or the making of repairs on the property now owned by a customer, at a very moderate rate of interest.
85 Years Ago – April 18, 1940
Thieves entered the Joseph Teclaw tavern one and one-half miles east of Longwood Wednesday night sometime after midnight, and stole a small quantity of liquor and wines.
Youth and gayety will be prevalent on Friday evening, April 26, when Miss Jean Cattanach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Cattanach of this city, and Hubert Glenzer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Glenzer Sr., of the town of Green Grove, will reign as queen and king of the annual junior promenade. They have selected as their theme for decorations a Japanese garden, and have engaged the orchestra of Carl Miller.
75 Years Ago – April 20, 1950
Edward Thorson, proprietor of the Hi-Way Hotel said Tuesday that he had given a 60 day option on the purchase of the business to Mr. John Kaminski of Milwaukee. Mr. Kapminski is the father of Mrs. Joseph Korpal of this city.
65 Years Ago – April 21, 1960
A long discussion which started Tuesday was terminated yesterday when the Clark County Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of a plot of land in the Town of Dewhurst commonly referred to as Bruce Mound.
Paul Cwikla, 18, Withee, was fined $200 and costs in county court at Neillsville Friday on two charges involving minors. He was charged with contributing to the delinquency of minors, and with giving beer to minors in Withee on April 13.
Dr. William Olson, Greenwood doctor who has delivered over 4,000 babies since he established his practice in that community, will be honored at a Chamber of Commerce dinner at Greenwood Saturday, May 14.
55 Years Ago – April 19, 1970
In a drastic move, made know to the public early Monday, Owen’s mayor, Dr. R.E. Arneson, submitted his resignation to city clerk J.J. Crowley. In an attempt to pursue reason for the action, the former mayor would offer no explanation.
An advisory referendum on the question of whether or not to construct a water distribution system in Curtiss was supported by a vote of 47 yes and 27 no in the spring election April 7.
45 Years Ago – April 17, 1980
A combination organizational and charter banquet for prospective Future Farmers of America Alumni will be at 8:00 p.m. April 28 at the Woodland Inn, Owen.
Cheryl Zimmerman will be traveling to Washington, D.C. to present a paper, “Protein Binding of Valproic Acid in the Presence of Elevated Free Fatty Acids in Patient and Human Plasma” at the 127th American Pharmaceutical Association.
35 Years Ago – April 19, 1990
Art Feldman presented an award of appreciation to Angie Bonk, a Green Thumb enrollee at the Owen-Withee Elementary School. Angie has been helping at the elementary school for the past two years on the Green Thumb program.
April 13 there was a beautiful surprise birthday party held at Dave’s Steak House in honor of Marilyn Borgeson given by her husband Sidney Borgeson. Eighty people were there including their four children.
25 Years Ago – April 19, 2000
Lenten Helpers is a group of 12 students, grades 3 through 5, at Holy Rosary School who are using this time of Lent to help others. The students have been giving speeches at Mass on weekends at Holy Rosary and taking collections each week for a different charity.
15 Years Ago – April 21, 2010
Approximately 100 head of cattle were saved when fire broke out at the farm of Fred Schindler Sr. Monday afternoon. One man died in an explosion that is believed to have started the blaze.
A new welcome sign coming into Owen as well as one on the outskirts of Withee. The signs were put in place by the Owen-Withee Area Chamber of Commerce.
The Withee Village Hall is in its new home now. Jim Mertens and Troy Hatlestad moved the heavy items last Friday and Village President Everett Lindgren and Clerk Michelle Renderman moved the boxes with files and paperwork in them.
