95 Years Ago – April 24, 1930
Clark County’s first motor policeman or “speed cop” has been selected by the Clark County Highway Commission and started his duties on the highways of Clark County this week. H.R. Haire of Owen has been equipped with a motorcycle and other necessary equipment and will police the highways of Clark County with orders to enforce all state driving laws.
A fire discovered in the ice house, belonging to Mrs. Cora Miller, threatened three other buildings at the north end of Central Avenue, Saturday afternoon. The origin of the fire thought to be from boys playing with matches, or from a spark from a nearby bonfire.
85 Years Ago – April 25, 1940
H.M. Wollum, president of the Owen Canning Company, left today for Madison where he is consulting with authorities of the state department of foods completing final arrangements for the canning operations at the plant which will be resumed this summer. The plant did not operate at all last summer.
75 Years Ago – April 27, 1950
Several weeks ago Carl Hill, constable, street and water commissioner of the village of Withee, submitted his resignation to the Village Board. Action on the matter was taken at the board’s meeting a week ago but all that was done was to accept his resignation formally and to view the list of applicants for the position which they received after advertising for applicants.
At one o’clock this afternoon principal W.K. Doonan accompanied the Modern Problems class of the Owen High School on a tour of the Clark County Asylum. The tour was made possible through the cooperation of the institution’s superintendent, Mr. Calvin Mills, who personally conducted the group of 31 students through the buildings and grounds.
65 Years Ago – April 28, 1960
Groundbreaking ceremonies will be witnessed Monday forenoon by employees of the Frederick Post Manufacturing Corporation and the public when Mr. R.J. Piehl, president of the firm, turns the first shovelful of dirt on the site where the firm will construct their new plant. The old building will be completely razed except for the dry kiln and boiler rooms.
As a result of two Joint County School Committee hearings held at the Woodland School, two miles south of Curtiss, and after conferences with the school boards involved the Joint County School Committee of Clark and Marathon counties detached about half of the Woodland School District and attached it to the Colby Elementary School District, and the Joint County School Committee of Clark and Taylor counties dissolved the Woodland School District and attached the western half to the Owen-Withee School District.
Mauel’s Dairy will soon have a new home. Situated on Highway 29 to the west of the Holy Rosary School, the building of concrete block construction will include a 16x30 foot store and service room, a 12x12 foot utility room, a 10x20 foot freezer room as well as a 12x16 foot boiler room. To the rear is a large three stall garage.

Miss Delores Rinehart, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Rinehart, Owen, was escorted by her father down the aisle of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Marshfield on Saturday, February 28, where she became the bride of Glen Vern Turner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Turner, Route 1, Owen.
45 Years Ago – April 24, 1980
Clark County will host the 1983 Farm Progress Days show! On Tuesday, April 15 during the spring session of the Clark County Board, the supervisors confirmed this by passing a resolution which cleared the way for the county to host the annual three day event. The board decided that the Clark County Health Care Center would be the ideal site for the show.
William T. “Bill” Ridpath, age 50, Owen businessman, was dead on arrival at the Colby Clinic after suffering an apparent heart attack on Sunday afternoon, April 20, 1980, while he was helping the O-W Fire Department fight a grass and brush fire on the Howard Anderson farm.
35 Years Ago – April 26, 1990
Connie Pogodzinski of Pogo’s Hardware Plus in Withee drew the five on-stage finalists for this week’s Money Game Show in Milwaukee, scheduled to air on Saturday, April 21, 1990.
25 Years Ago – April 26, 2000
Hannah Martine won recognition as the district winner for the Respecteen Speak For Yourself letter writing contest. Hannah’s letter was picked from approximately 10,000 letters to win. Hannah’s letter pointed out the lack of nutritional facts on fast food labels.
15 Years Ago – April 28, 2010
Terry Parker and Richard Entrop, of Temple, TX, have announced the engagement of their daughter Kristen Diane Parker to Mark Alan Blumenstein, both of Temple. The couple plans a June 12 wedding.
