95 Years Ago – May 22, 1930
The Acker Construction Co. of Owen was awarded the general building contract for the new theatre to be erected at Medford. The bids were opened last week.
Commencement exercises for the 1930 graduating class of Withee high school were held Wednesday evening at Dana Hall. Fifteen graduates, dressed in black caps and gowns, received their diplomas.
85 Years Ago – May 23, 1940
Monday of the week a crew of workmen began the job of remodeling the city hall to increase its office space. The part that previously had served as a garage for the fire engine is being rebuilt into an office room, 14 feet in width and 28 feet in length. This new room will be finished off with new wood and will afford office space for the justice of the peace and the police department in the east end of the room and the WPA will have its office in the west end. The portion of the building that has been used by the WPA and the city officials will be used as the office of the city clerk and treasurer and will serve the city council. The building when completed, will have an entrance to the new part the same as that of the council room.
75 Years Ago – May 25, 1950
March, of the year 1925 was a busy one for the residents of the village of Owen, for they were preparing for the spring election, which would finally see the village blossom out into a full fledged city. April 7 was election day, and 396 voters came out to exercise their franchise. And so it was that Owen finally became a City. Mayor A. H. Mohr presided at the first meeting of the Owen Common Council on April 21.
65 Years Ago – May 26, 1960
A canvass of the entire membership of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Withee, was made Sunday afternoon and evening, May 22. Total pledges so far received towards the Building Program amounted to about $26,500.
Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Thompson, Withee, announce the engagement of their daughter Caroline Mae, to Donald Pietrowski, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Pietrowski of Milan.
55 Years Ago – May 21, 1970
Susan Rohland, valedictorian of the graduating class at Owen-Withee High School, has been given the Annual Award of the Reader’s Digest Association for students who by their successful schoolwork give promise of attaining leadership in the community.
At 10:38 Tuesday night the fire company extinguished a grass fire that started of an unknown origin. It was just south of the Soo Line railroad tracks to the east of County Trunk D, across from the NSP substation.
45 Years Ago – May 22, 1980
An auto reported stolen in Marshfield on Wednesday, May 14, by its Medford owner, was reported found by police officials in a gravel pit west of Withee on Sunday afternoon, May 18, 1990.
Tammy L. Wagner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wagner, Owen, was among 75 undergraduate and graduate students at the UW-Oshkosh College of Education and Human Services who were honored recently by the Beta Theta of Kappa Delta Phi, national honor society in education.
35 Years Ago – May 24, 1990
Harvey and Velda Anderson were pleasantly surprised on May 6, to return home after being to church and out to lunch to find a house full of guests, in honor of their 40th anniversary.
25 Years Ago – May 24, 2000
Gerald and Marianne Frese, Owen and Nick and Sue Klapatauskus of Thorp, announce the engagement of their children, Karla Frese and Gregory Klapatauskas. Wedding plans are for July 29, 2000.
15 Years Ago – May 26, 2010
On May 19, 2010, Midwest Aluminum Inc., one of the nation’s leading independent manufacturers of aluminum extrusions for a broad range of industrial markets, announced that it has commenced a court-authorized receivership sale process to enable the company to operate without interruption as it transitions to new ownership. The company’s assets are scheduled to be sold in June through the receivership proceedings pending in the Circuit Court for Clark County.
The Technology Education Department has a new Miller Diversion 165 TIG welding machine courtesy of Mississippi Welders Supply from Marshfield. Mr. Larry Wetzel of Mississippi Welders Supply donated this welder to A&B Process Systems from Stratford so they could use it as a raffle prize for all the schools who take part in their annual welding competition.
The new scoreboards for the softball and baseball field were purchased this year from O-W Club funds and arrived on Easter weekend. The boards were installed and put up by the school maintenance staff with steel donated by Midway Steel. Baehr Electric did the electrical work and they are currently waiting for Xcel Energy to do their part. Hanson Masonry provided the forklift.
