95 Years Ago – May 29, 1930
Edward Laneville, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Laneville, and Miss Alice Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Miller of the town of Hixon, were quietly married Monday morning at 10 o’clock, at Winona, MN.
85 Years Ago – May 30, 1940
Last Saturday night, a fast Soo Line freight train, heavily loaded, left the tracks at the Lombard siding six miles west of Owen without causing personal injury to any of the crew. It is believed that a car loaded with about 50 tons of engine tires shifted its load as the train came speeding down the grade and derailed the car and 20 others from the middle of the train consisting of 40 cars.
A fire of unknown origin broke out on the Spot Tavern roof on Central Avenue at about 2:30 Saturday afternoon of last week and was checked by the local fire company before very serious damage was realized. The fire started in the attic and broke out on the roof, fortunately there was not a heavy wind to fan the blaze with which made it easy to check the fire. It was estimated that the damage realized will run about $200.
75 Years Ago – June 1, 1950
Friday, June 2, the management and ownership of the Owen Theatre will be transferred from its present owners, Messrs. Virgil and Clarence Callahan to Mr. Robert Hobighorst, a former resident of Pulaski.
A direct selling agreement has been effective between the General Motors Corporation and Tony Auberg, Withee, for the outlet of Pontiac automobiles in this vicinity. The agreement went into effect as of May 12. The Withee agency is known as West Side Pontiac.
65 Years Ago – June 2, 1960
The new coin-operated Econ-O-Wash housed at the corner of Fourth and Pine Streets will open to the public next Monday.
The date of the preliminary hearing for Andrew Nordby, a deaf mute, from Prairie Farm, was rescheduled for June 1 at 2 p.m. in county court. He is charged with armed robbery at the Woodland Hotel in Owen March 19. Bond of $5,000 was not furnished and he is committed to the county jail awaiting trial.
55 Years Ago – May 28, 1970
David Gaddis, Myron Wirtala and Douglas Christopherson along with Mr. James Ferries, FFA Advisor, totaled up 760 points to come in second in dairy cattle judging at Madison. This is the second time in the last three years that an Owen-Withee team has captured second place in the largest of all state judging contests.
45 Years Ago – May 29, 1980
Kathleen Frederickson has been hired by the Owen City Council as the new Owen City Clerk and she will assume her new duties on Monday, June 16, 1980.
The old Curtiss Railroad Depot is being torn down, however, it is not being torn down in Curtiss but in Owen. The old depot was moved to Owen and is now standing near the Sunset Drive-In.
35 Years Ago – May 31, 1990
The Owen Jr. Fair Board Play Park is finally up and getting plenty of use. Hatlestad Construction did the work, assembling and cementing in the equipment and hauling in six inches of white sand.
The next meeting of the Clark County Historical Society will be held in Withee on Thursday evening, June 7. This is the 25th birthday of the Clark County Historical Society and following a Civil War program a birthday cake will be cut and served.
25 Years Ago – May 31, 2000
There is a new flag flying at the new Withee Lions grounds. The 5 ft. by 8 ft. flag along with two maple trees was donated by Dale and Rhonda Sleznikow in honor of Doc and Waverly Jarvis’ 50th wedding anniversary.
15 Years Ago – June 2, 2010
When the Marshfield Dental Clinic announced they would be leaving Owen, it was a blow to area residents to find out they were losing their dentist and would have to go elsewhere for dental services. We have recently found out the good news that Dr. Tom Gelhaus will be moving his practice back to his clinic on Central Avenue.
Barbara Blumenstein (and the late Eugene Blumenstein) would like to announce the engagement of their son Brandon Alan Blumenstein to Raquel Christine Hutts, daughter of Stephen and Moana Hutts of Eagle River. A small destination wedding is set for July 2010.
