95 Years Ago – June 12, 1930
A home talent play, “The Winning Widow” will be presented at the hall at Clark on Tuesday evening, June 17. The play will be given by the Danish Sisterhood Lodge of Withee.
85 Years Ago – June 13, 1940
Since the coming and passing of spring and with the approach of summer, the effects of civic improvements and spring cleaning are very noticeable in our city.
The Service Company of the 128th Infantry of the Wisconsin National Guard under the command of Captain William Bernard Tufts will bivouac at the Withee ball grounds on Saturday, June 15.
75 Years Ago – June 15, 1950
After being trailed around the countryside for nearly three hours Saturday night by a strange car, Melvin Martosiewicz was forced off the highway with his car, while driving west of Withee on Highway 29 at about 10:45 Saturday night and robbed of $80.
Farm buildings on the Will Randow farm, located one-half mile south of Withee on Highway 73 and then seven tenths of a mile west, were seriously threatened by fire early Saturday morning. The threat originated when the ruins of a 20x40 foot barn structure which Mr. Randow had been razing caught fire from a spark from the pipe he was smoking while working around the building. There was no loss as far as that building was concerned—more of a convenience—but serious loss threatened to materialize when sparks were fanned to the nearby barn and machine shed by a strong gusty wind.
65 Years Ago – June 16, 1960
The Curtiss Evangelical Lutheran Church will celebrate its 75th anniversary on Sunday, June 19. The Curtiss Evangelical Lutheran Church was organized in 1885 by Rev. N. Forde and served by mission pastors until 1917 when the Holway congregation became part of the parish.
Two separate hearings were held on Thursday night, June 9, by the Joint County School Committee of Clark and Taylor counties. The first held at the Elmhurst School in the Town of Hoard resulted in the dissolution of the Elmhurst School District and its attachment to the Owen-Withee School District. The second hearing held on the evening of June 9, resulted in the dissolution of the White School District in the Town of Hixon and the entire district was attached to the Owen-Withee School District.
55 Years Ago – June 11, 1970
Many, many friends of the Owen and Withee area gathered at the Meadowview Country Club on Friday night bidding farewell to Mr. and Mrs. Clark Couillard at an evening reception gathering. Refreshments and lunch were served and a firearm and money gift were presented to the couple.
45 Years Ago – June 12, 1980
They said it couldn’t happen again! They said that the City of Owen would never again experience a disastrous flood like the floods of 1914, 1938 and 1943. However, they were wrong! Last Friday, June 6, 1980, the City of Owen experienced a flood almost as disastrous as those in the past, and all day there was threat of more heavy rains that caused many to fear that the flooding would become even more serious, and more extensive.
Jeff Laube, a native of Owen and a 1980 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Superior, has been selected to represent the United States on the NAIA-AAU International Wrestling Team which will tour the Far East in June and July.
35 Years Ago – June 14, 1990
The second annual O-W Massed Chorus Concert, presented at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Withee on Sunday evening, June 3, drew over 200 in attendance.
Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kadolph are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Lori to Rick Jalling, son of Mr. Jack Jalling and the late Kathleen Jalling, Owen. An August 11, 1990 wedding is being planned.
Harris and Sandra Borslien of Buffalo Lake, Minnesota, announce the engagement of their daughter Susan C. Borslien to Jesse C. Nelson, son of Gerald and Diane Nelson, Withee. They will be married July 21, 1990.
25 Years Ago – June 14, 2000
Terry Wnek was sworn into office as Owen Postmaster Wednesday, June 7 at 9:30 a.m.
Happy Birthday to Ann Grajak who turned 89 the 10th of June. A party was held at the Back 40, Lublin.
15 Years Ago – June 16, 2010
A son, Dan Edison Graski, was born June 5, 2010, at 4:53 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Hospital to Ann and Todd Graski of Withee. He weighed 9 lbs. 6 oz. and was 21½ inches long.
