Doc Wilson and his orchestra featuring “Flo” the great blues singer, has been booked for the Mileaway dance pavilion for two nights, July 3 and 4.
The Medford laundry has started a truck service to Owen and will be here every Wednesday and Saturday after laundry. Laine & Devine will act as agents for them.
85 Years Ago – July 4, 1940
Improvements in the transmission line system of the Northern States Power Company to this vicinity provide for the rebuilding and rerouting of the 66,000-volt transmission line from Owen to the T-Corners substation located just west of Colby. The total cost of building the new line and tearing down the old one is slightly more than $45,000.
75 Years Ago – July 6, 1950
Appearing in justice court in Neillsville before Donald Kalsow on Tuesday, June 27, Louis Gehrke, cheesemaker in the town of Longwood plead guilty to charges of using some equipment found to be in an unsanitary condition. Gehrke paid the fine of $25 and cost amounting to $4.
Now enjoying a two-week honeymoon trip through the western states and California are Beverly Ann Poppe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Poppe, Withee, and Carl Edwin Sillampa, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gust Sillampa. Owen. The young couple were married at two o’clock Saturday afternoon, July 1.
The marriage of Miss Irene Sapetta of Thorp to Thomas William Himes of Madison was solemnized at St. Raphael’s Cathedral in Madison on Saturday morning, July 1, 1950. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton E. Sapetta.
65 Years Ago – July 7, 1960
Hank Lutz of Thorp has won the first annual medalists tournament held at the Meadowview Golf Club. Lutz won easily by carding a 75, four strokes less than runner-up Doug Page toured the course in.
Practically all grain fields in the area have been hit during the past 10 days by grain aphids says Jim Ferries, agriculture instructor at the Owen-Withee Senior High School.
55 Years Ago – July 2, 1970
Owen’s newest business place—Jack’s Lanes 11th Frame Bar & Café will open its doors to the public tomorrow. The public’s introduction to its facilities will be limited, however, because as John Jalling and Jack both said “it has been one delay after another.” What they will see is the fine, colorful bar facilities capable of seating upwards of 40 people. The dining room of 44 people capacity and kitchen will not be ready to serve at this time because of a delay—due to the truck strike—of warming ovens and ranges.
Sunday Father H.L. Crubel preached his farewell sermon to parishioners of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Owen, a parish he had served for 28 years.
45 Years Ago – July 3, 1980
Jim Kowalczyk, Boyd, has opened the barbershop on Central Avenue in Owen, formerly occupied by the late Bill Ridpath and will be offering his services each Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. He is considering remaining open one evening a week.
Baskets of green tipped carnations decorated the altar of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Owen on Saturday, June 7 as Lisa Kay Gehrke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ron Gehrke, Owen, become the bride of Kim Pomputis, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Pomputis, Withee.
35 Years Ago – July 5, 1990
Owen-Withee is one of 202 public school districts and 18 other educational institutions who will share approximately $6 million in vocational education grants. The Owen-Withee School District will receive a grant for $6,405 for seven projects.
Mary Kathryn Jensen was honored as a 50-year member of Owen Chapter #274, Order of the Eastern Star. After a brief review of her years of membership, she was presented with a corsage and her Life Membership card.
25 Years Ago – July 5, 2000
The Village of Withee and James Hatlestad came to an agreement on the purchase of the Hatlestad Construction building on the west side of town. The paperwork is finished and work has already begun on the construction of a new building for Hatlestad which is located on Progress Street in the Industrial Park in Withee.
Father Guy Usher started June 15 at his new pastorate, St. Katherine’s Parish, Owen. His first Sunday service was on June 18.

The Central Wisconsin Agribusiness Innovation Center (CWAIC), the group that is establishing an agricultural business incubator near Owen, WI, has hired its first executive director. Mike Kawleski will lead fundraising, tenant recruitment and marketing for the Center.
