105 Years Ago – July 15, 1920
A.J. Dillett has opened a law office in the room above the Dairy Belt Land Co. office.
The Rev. August Wendt, a graduate of the Northwestern Bible School, has been engaged to act as pastor of the Congregational Church for a period of two months.
95 Years Ago – July 17, 1930
The guessing contest conducted by the Hardware Specialty Company at Withee, on the number of cars that would pass the Stevenson & Berger Co., July 4, was won by Herman Stark of Withee. The total number of cars passing the corner was 3,392, and his guess was 3,375.
Nightlike darkness prevailed for almost an hour and a wind of tornadic velocity hit several points of Clark County damaging several silos and barns and doing much damage to small grains early Thursday.
85 Years Ago – July 18, 1940
Vernon Schley, who for the past several years has been trucking milk to the Carnation Company, recently sold out his route to his brother and left Tuesday of the week for California where he plans on entering a trade school and taking up tinsmithing and affiliating himself with the airplane industry.
Mr. and Mrs. Adam Olszewski who reside three miles north and one-half mile west of Withee, were pleasantly surprised by about 75 friends Sunday afternoon, July 14, the occasion being their 25th wedding anniversary.
75 Years Ago – July 20, 1950
Several building bees have been held at the Meadowview Country Club throughout the past two weeks at which time volunteer laborers have put up frames, poured a 15x40 foot four-inch concrete slab and built the frame for the new porch which is being built on the east side of the dining rooms of the club house. The porch will replace the smaller porch which was blown away and destroyed during the wind storm of October 4 of last year.
A new $9,000 steel equipment building, located in the center of the town of Hoard, northeast of Owen, houses the township’s road equipment and supplies. The 40x60 building, which also has a small office used for town meetings, is completely insulated and has an automatic oil-burning furnace.

Among the select 10% of applicants appointed cadets at the United States Coast Guard Academy recently was David Zawadzki, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Zawadzki of route 1, Withee.
55 Years Ago – July 16, 1970
The Clark County Board of Supervisors, at a summer session here Wednesday, authorized the Clark County Hospital at Owen to construct a 50 by 70 foot addition to the hospital dairy barn and to make other barn improvements at an estimated cost of $40,000.
George Ryan, head football and track coach and an assistant in basketball here the past three years has submitted his resignation to the Board of Education.
45 Years Ago – July 17, 1980
Cable TV is coming to Withee within six to eight months, according to Ben Mueller, village president, who stated the board agreed to a contract with SKYCOM at its regular meeting Tuesday, July 8.
After agreeing upon numerous recommendations to present the voters at the upcoming annual meeting, the O-W School Board at the regular meeting Monday, July 14, decided it would not make a recommendation regarding the building of a new school. It appeared the consensus of the board was “let the voters tell us what they want at the annual meeting.”
35 Years Ago – July 19, 1990
Vincent and Irene (Voge) Frane of Owen, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Friday, July 6, 1990. A ride in a 1930 Model A Ford to Dave’s Steak House started their party.
The carriage house at the Gerald Fults home is being renovated and plans are to turn it into an antique shop. The Futzs’ bought the Sutter house (formerly the A.R. Owen home) after the Sutter auction.
25 Years Ago – July 19, 2000
Tom Pritzl, Branch Manager, Community Bank of Central Wisconsin, Owen, presented a plaque to Mayor Allen Gajewsky on behalf of the City of Owen, in recognition of the city’s 75th Anniversary.
Heavy infestations of army worms are attacking corn fields in Northcentral Wisconsin according to the Clark County Crops and Soils Agent Ron Wiederholt.
15 Years Ago – July 21, 2010
On Wednesday, July 14, 2010, at approximately 2:45 a.m., the Clark County Sheriff’s Department received a 9-1-1 call reporting a possible explosion and fire at Town and Country Motors, in the city of Owen. Owen-Withee Fire Department responded and found one school bus fully engulfed in fire. Initial investigation indicates the fire is suspicious in nature.
An airplane made an emergency landing in the soybean field belonging to Eli Sensenig on Miller Avenue, on Tuesday, July 13. The pilot was coming from Wausau on the way to Eau Claire when the plane started experiencing engine trouble. The pilot was uninjured and waited for a mechanic to come from Eau Claire.
