105 Years Ago – August 5, 1920
Jack Dempsey and the movie celebrity, Dustin Farnum, were in Clark County last week. Dempsey at dinner at Neillsville, while on his way through the county by auto. Farnum was at Greenwood looking after land interests he has there.
95 Years Ago – August 7, 1930
The large plant of the Owen Box & Crating Co., was threatened with destruction early Tuesday morning when fire was discovered in the east wing of the building by night watchman, Dwight Balow. When making his rounds at four o’clock he discovered smoke coming from underneath the floor of the east wing, and immediately turned in an alarm. The fire company answered the call and after they had torn up a considerable portion of the floor of the room, the fire was checked.
Joseph Kowaleski met with a very painful accident Monday morning when he lost his right arm below the elbow. Together with his brother Mike he started the threshing season at the Albert Oskoski farm, three and one-half miles east of Redville. Mr. Kowaleski, who was on the separator jumped to the ground when the blower became clogged. The drive belt flew off at the same time, catching him in the arm and severing the member below the elbow.
85 Years Ago – August 8, 1940
One of the city’s earliest pioneers, William Sutter, 72, passed away Monday evening at the home of his daughter Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Montgomery at Galesville, the cause of his death being pneumonia.
Sunday, August 4, Mr. and Mrs. John Laneville of Withee, were honored by their nine children, 19 grandchildren, and friends numbering 125 in all, at their home, in observance of their golden wedding anniversary.
75 Years Ago – August 10, 1950
The household goods of Rev. and Mrs. Clayton Nielsen, the newly appointed Danish minister, arrived here last Thursday from Salina, Kansas. The parsonage has been entirely redecorated and painted in anticipation of the new pastor’s arrival.
65 Years Ago – August 11, 1960
Mrs. Irene Munson was hospitalized at Stanley and treated for a broken collar bone which injury was sustained when the car in which she was riding collided with a truck in the Village of Withee Sunday forenoon.
Approval of a federal grant of $9,462 for construction of sewage treatment facilities at Withee has been announced by the surgeon general of the United States.
55 Years Ago – August 6, 1970
Several members of the Owen Kiwanis Club put the final touches to playground equipment they recently erected at the Mill Pond Park. The slide and swing set were resurrected from discarded playground equipment as the result of the merger of rural schools with the public system several years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Tomczak, route 1, Withee are the proud parents of a daughter named Denise Marie, born to them at the Stanley Hospital on Sunday, July 19.
45 Years Ago – August 7, 1980
The first woman veterinarian to practice in the immediate area has joined the staff at the Dairyland Animal Clinic. It is Mrs. Inge Eriks-Cantor’s first position since graduating this spring from Michigan State University and she will be working full time on large and small animals.
35 Years Ago – August 9, 1990
United in marriage on Saturday, July 21, 1990 were Susan L. Borslien, daughter of Harris and Sandra Borslien of Buffalo Lake, MN, and Jesse C. Nelson, son of Gerald and Diane Nelson of Withee.
25 Years Ago – August 9, 2000
Nellie Gelhaus, daughter of Dr. Thomas and Mary Gelhaus of Owen, will participate in Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota’s London semester program this Fall. Nellie, a musical theatre and vocal performance major, is a junior at SMU.
15 Years Ago – August 11, 2010
The O-W Pharmacy held their annual Sidewalk Sale in the Lions Pavilion last Friday. The bag sale, which started around 11:00, was a big hit as shoppers filled a grocery bag with as much as they could for $5.
