95 Years Ago – August 14, 1930
The firm of Mattson & Haaya was dissolved this week when Mr. Mattson sold his interest in the business to Emil Haaya. This firm has been in the grocery business in this city for the past 14 years and enjoyed a large trade. Donald Haaya has now become associated with his father in the business.
A new school house is being erected in District No. 2, town of Hoard, by the Acker Construction Co. of Owen, who was awarded the contract last week. The building will take the place of the Midway School that was demolished in the storm of June 13. The structure will be of brick and tile with asbestos shingles. It will be a one room school 34½ x 42½ feet with entry 11x15. Space will be permitted for a library, kitchen and a teacher’s room with a large playroom in the basement.
85 Years Ago – August 15, 1940
A pretty summer wedding was solemnized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R.C. Graham when their daughter, Doris Clare, and Lionel Homer LeGault, who makes his home with Mr. and Mrs. H.R. Palms, of Menomonie, exchanged the holy vows of matrimony Saturday, August 10.
On complaint of operating his tavern after the one o’clock closing law, made by state enforcement officer, J. H. Riebe, against Adolph Jackson, owner and operator of the Merry Ol’ Gardens dance hall, Mr. Jackson submitted a plea of guilty the fore part of the week. He was fined $5 and costs.
75 Years Ago – August 17, 1950
One of the highlights of the Owen Jr. Fair will be an amateur contest to be held Friday afternoon at the Owen Theatre with Dr. Crosby as master of ceremonies. Winners of this contest will compete on Friday with the contestants of a recent Cedric Adams amateur contest that was held at Colby. This contest will be held on main street.
William Catura returned to his position at the Commonwealth Telephone Company Tuesday for the first time in 10 days having been confined to his home since a week ago Sunday recovering from a slight concussion that occurred when he was struck on the head with a baseball while playing with the Owen-Withee Kids at Abbotsford.
65 Years Ago – August 18, 1960
Ground has been broken on the site of the new clinic building to be built by G.R. Scharer, doctor of chiropractic. The site is on Highway 29 directly across the street from Badger Shooters Supply. The structure will measure 42x51 feet being one story of frame construction with a three-foot brick wall and the upper portion of the building finished off in redwood paneling.
55 Years Ago – August 13, 1970
J.R. Barager, Owen-Withee delegate to the annual convention of delegates to the Cooperative Education Services Agency No. 6 convention held at the courthouse in Chippewa Falls Monday night, was elected chairman of the convention.
45 Years Ago – August 14, 1980
The commotion caused by the rupturing of a million-and-a-half-pound capacity whey holding tank Tuesday afternoon, August 5, at the Northland Foods Cooperative in Owen has subsided and production operations have returned to normal, according to Ron Gehrke, plant manager.
The revival of an old tradition was experienced at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee Sunday, August 9, when the parishoners and guests attended an outdoor service held in the pine woods behind the parish hall.
35 Years Ago – August 16, 1990
Sunday, August 5, the O-W Veterans Club and VFW Post 9007 presented a new flagpole and flag to the new Owen Library.
25 Years Ago – August 10, 2000
Jeremy D. Goessl, Curtiss, has been awarded the Wisconsin Rural Opportunities Foundation Short Course scholarship for the 2000-01 academic year, according to Richard H. Daluge, director of the Farm and Industry Short Course and assistant dean in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
15 Years Ago – August 18, 2010
The Owen Police Department has concluded its investigation into the fire on July 14, 2010, in Owen that involved a school bus parked at Town and Country Service in Owen. After investigation, it was learned two juveniles, from the Owen and Greenwood area, gained access into the bus and intentionally started the fire. Due to their age, referrals are being made to the Clark County Dept. of Social Services for Arson, Recklessly Endangering Safety, Criminal Damage to Property, and Criminal Trespassing.
Sid Borgeson appeared before the Withee Village Board asking for approval of the bids for work to start on the concession stand and the concrete work at the ballpark. There is adequate money in the ballpark fund which will allow phase one of the project to be completed. Phase one is tearing down the present concession stand, removing the concrete that it sits on and also removing the concrete under the bleachers along with removal of the rocks.
