Internationally recognized as America’s greatest dance orchestra conductor—with an equally famous orchestra, Isham Jones and His World-Famous Recording Orchestra have been engaged to appear at Mileaway Dance Pavilion on Friday, August 29.
85 Years Ago – August 22, 1940
With recent completion of redecorating and the construction of a new addition to the Soo Café which now is more than twice as large as previously, the management has provided the city with an ideal restaurant, serving meals 24 hours a day.
At a hearing at the Owen city hall last Thursday afternoon, John Blum of this city, defendant on charges of taking liberties with a female child, was bound over for trial at the fall term of the Clark County Circuit Court, by Judge O.E. Parkinson. His bond was set at $500.
75 Years Ago – August 24, 1950
The biggest bean pack ever canned by the Owen Canning Corporation is now being handled. The beans started ripening early while the plant was still handling one of the largest and finest pea crops in their history.
Eugene H. Schaefer of Owen has been promoted to the grade of Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force, it was announced by his officer Major. Leonard G. Schultz.
65 Years Ago – August 25, 1960
Record crowds were on hand this year for the Owen Junior Fair, especially for the Saturday and Sunday performances. There were 311 exhibitors registered—some of whom had as many as 30 entries—with total premium money paid out amounting to $1,191.30.
55 Years Ago – August 20, 1970
Mr. and Mrs. Louis Burhop are leaving Sunday on a week’s expense paid trip to Paris, France, compliments of Oldsmobile for accomplishing the greatest percent of a car Sales Campaign extending from January 1 to June 10.
As in the past years interested citizens of the O-W School District will be called upon to assist the school by transporting athletes home after practices. Mrs. Rosalyn Hanson at the administration office is in charge of soliciting interested citizens for this service.
45 Years Ago – August 21, 1980
It was back to the drawing board for the athletic handbook as members of the O-W School Board at their regularly scheduled meeting Monday, August 18, reached a stalemate regarding the rules and regulations governing students involved in sports activities. An opinion “raise the standards, get tough” counteracted by the philosophy “you don’t breed excellency by denying opportunity,” reflected opposite views concerning grade point eligibility.
35 Years Ago – August 23, 1990
Wednesday, August 15, Withee was all a-buzz with friends and customers of Dawn Skowronek coming to the Lunch Box Café to give their best wishes to Dawn as she put in her final day at the restaurant. The welcome mat was then put out to greet Bob and Sheri Mengel as they prepared to take over ownership of the Lunch Box on Thursday, August 16.
A tax levy of $1,273,003 was approved by unanimous vote at the Owen-Withee School District annual meeting on Monday. It should be noted the Owen-Withee School District has had no increase in the tax levy in seven years which when comparing to other schools is very unusual.
Foster and Ruth Will on August 18 at 4:00 p.m. celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with a Polka Mass. This was followed by a social hour and dinner for their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, their sponsors and relatives.

Governor Tommy Thompson has signed a $4 million contract to construct a full diamond interchange at the intersection of WIS 29 and Clark County E (Curtiss).

Arnie Laakso was honored at the Senior Center with balloons and cake for his 99th birthday.
If you travel south of Withee on Highway 73 you will see plots of corn and plots of soybeans with crop advertising signs near each plot. This is a research facility owned by Cenex/Land O’Lakes, who is the parent company of Heartland Co-op. This is one of the largest field plots in Wisconsin, with 20 acres of trials divided into one-third exhibit trials and two-thirds research.
