95 Years Ago – August 28, 1930
Another 15-cent dividend is being paid by the Farmers State Bank of Granton which is now in the process of liquidation. The bank closed its doors last winter and since closing several dividends have been paid the creditors.
85 Years Ago – August 29, 1940
A new 35x15 foot ramp for loading and unloading purposes for the various concerns and individuals of the city has been constructed alongside the Soo Line tracks back of the post office building. The construction of this ramp was made possible through the efforts of the Owen Commercial Club when it was made known to them that the facilities formerly used were no longer available for the use of any party other than the owner. This action came about, not from the owner of the ramp formerly used, but because of a notification received from the insurance company.
The library walls and ceiling have just been given a fresh coat of paint. The furniture has been varnished, floors newly waxed and best of all, new window shades, which were so badly needed have been installed. It looks like a brand-new place with all of these improvements.
75 Years Ago – August 31, 1950
An estimated 9,690 pounds of milk was dumped in a pasture one mile north of Owen this morning at 10:15 when a milk truck driven by Larry Petruzates ran off the highway and overturned as Petruzates lost control of it while attempting to pass a road grader. Petruzates said that when he saw he couldn’t hold the truck after having traveled 125 feet with the right wheels off the shoulder he ducked under the steering wheel as it overturned. He emerged from the wrecked cab without a scratch.
The former Miss Jane Suda, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Suda, and Arthur L. Petersen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter C. Petersen, all of Owen, were married Saturday by the Rev. Raymond H. Bornbach, pastor of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Owen.
A defective chimney in the pig barn at the Clark County Hospital was the cause of the second fire in that building since June. Saturday night fire was noticed by Mrs. Lawrence Schnoor as she and her husband were leaving their home about 9 p.m. The June fire which occurred at 6 a.m. did serious damage, completely destroying the second story of the cooking room of the building.
65 Years Ago – September 1, 1960
What some find to be fun—screeching tires with their cars—proved to be a costly playtime for two area motorists this past week. Gerald Tomczak, route 1, Thorp, and Jerome Wilczek, route 1, Withee, each forfeited $25 on these charges made by Chief of Police Adolph Haavisto.
Little LeAnn Marie was born August 30 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield weighing in at six pounds and 12 ounces. Her proud parents are Mr. and Mrs. Leon Bruchert of Withee.
The Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Owen, was the setting August 13 for the marriage of Miss Virginia Lee Parker to Mr. Gerald Thomas Miller. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Harold Parker, city, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank T. Miller, Elroy, WI.
55 Years Ago – August 27, 1970
For the past several years the story of the five-city match has been that the host club is usually the winner. That was until Sunday when the delegation from the Meadowview Country Club, Owen, traveled to Phillips and broke the tradition. They edged out the host club by two strokes to bring home the traveling trophy.
45 Years Ago – August 25, 1980
A break-in at the Owen-Withee Fire Department has resulted in an estimated $1,000 damage to the new ambulance according to members of the force, who stated it is the first time in the history of the department that any vandalism has occurred to equipment.
On August 6, 1980, Ralph and Gwen Peterson of Curtiss, attended the Wisconsin State Fair in Milwaukee where they received recognition for having a century farm.
35 Years Ago – August 30, 1990
There has been a policy change for the nutrition program, which went into effect Monday, August 27, 1990. They have gone to a meal reservation system. Participants will need to call the center coordinator at their local nutrition center by 12:30 p.m. the day before to reserve a meal. Extra meals will not be ordered.
25 Years Ago – August 30, 2000
Lori Cooley stated that she has resigned as librarian for the Village of Withee Public Library and she felt the Village Board should know why she did.
15 Years Ago – September 1, 2010
Dennis Lulloff gave a report to the Owen Council on the Parks & Rec Committee meeting on August 11. Four plans were presented for redesign of the Mill Pond Park area.
