95 Years Ago – September 18, 1930
Frank Carey, driver of a Cities Service gas truck narrowly escaped being held up last night at about 10 o’clock, three miles west of Withee, when two men threw a bag of lime and sand mixed into the cab of the truck in which he was driving. Mr. Carey believed that their motive was to blind him, so that he could not see to drive, forcing his truck to the ditch, and then holding him up.
Floyd McErn, proprietor of the Wayside Service Station at Withee, was held up and robbed of $25.50 last night at about 9:30 when two hold-up men entered his service station.
85 Years Ago – September 19, 1940
An average of five aliens a day have appeared at the Owen post office up to Wednesday for registration purposes. The increase of aliens to appear has been steady the past 10 days as word is undoubtedly getting around to the individuals that the registering is compulsory.
At a hearing held Saturday, Lester Schultz, former assistant cashier of the Citizens State Bank and in charge of its Granton station, plead guilty to a charge of embezzling $6,480.45. Judge Emery W. Crosby sentenced Lester to a term of one to four years at hard labor in the state prison at Waupun.
75 Years Ago – September 21, 1950
Continued expansion in the services offered the buying public of this vicinity is again evident at the Will Implement Company of Owen, who within a month will inaugurate a scheduled delivery service of liquid propane (bottled gas).
65 Years Ago – September 22, 1960
A highlight for one of our homemakers in Clark County came this past Wednesday afternoon when Mrs. Martin Keskimaki appeared over the WSAU-TV station as she participated in a five county Dairy Recipe Bake-Off contest. Mrs. Keskimaki’s recipe was brought over from Finland by her mother, and the recipe has been in the family for over 50 years.
55 Years Ago – September 17, 1970
Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Mills announced their plans for retirement at a press conference of county publications held Monday afternoon at the Clark County Hospital. “Mrs. Mills and myself have been here 25 years and this staff has grown from 25 to 40 employees.”
The Board of Trustees made it clear in their naming Arlyn Mills to succeed his father that his candidacy for the position wasn’t fostered because he was his son but that he was “picked because of qualifications.” From June 1, 1966 to the present time Mr. Mills has been at the Clark County Hospital serving as assistance administrator at the psychiatric hospital and skilled nursing care facility.
45 Years Ago – September 18, 1980
Don and Louise Luedke are happy about the rapid growth of their new business, The Pop Shoppe. Located next to Don’s Shell Station in Withee, the Pop Shoppe is a good gathering place for people of all ages.
Friday, September 19, is the last day of work for Stella Laski. She will be leaving her post as secretary at the Owen-Withee High School after 11 years of employment with the O-W school system.
35 Years Ago – September 20, 1990
Possible negligent homicide and patient abuse charges against the Clark County Health Care Center are being investigated by the Clark County District Attorney’s Office. Herman Klabon, 64, died March 15, 1989 at the Clark County Health Care Center. Witnesses say, Klabon may have been mistreated during the weeks before his death.
City Hall in Owen is receiving a face lift, making more office space and meeting room. In tearing down the interior walls, carpenters found a piece of cardboard with the names of Carl Riber, Floyd Clifton, Oscar Larson and Frank Crye written on it and dated January 30, 1935. Along with the names was written, “This building was erected to keep a few people from starving to death during the terrible depression of 1932-1937.
25 Years Ago – September 20, 2000
J and J’s Bar on Owen’s Central Avenue opened its doors for business at 12 noon, Friday, September 15. The former Pat and Twink’s establishment had been closed for about a year and a half. Jeff Mengel and Joyce Shelton, the J and J of the newly renovated bar are happy to show off the new look of an old Owen tavern.
15 Years Ago – September 22, 2010
On July 7, 2010, the doors re-opened for Pike Office Supply with longtime employee Barb Hansen coming back to manage the store. Mark Renderman of Withee and his business partner Mark Gorke of Abbotsford purchased the business.
The O-W School Board kicked off their first meeting of the 2010-2011 school year with the unveiling of the new district website by District Superintendent Bob Houts. Houts and his committee spent many hours designing the site and installing new interactive features that make it an efficient operational as well as a dynamic promotional tool for the entire school community.
