95 Years Ago – October 16, 1930
Members of the Wisconsin Junior Chamber of Commerce, who for three days toured the central part of the state, making their ninth annual tour of Wisconsin cities, paid Owen a visit shortly before three o’clock Monday afternoon.
Owen is to have another oil station, this one being located at the east side of the city on Highway 29, where it makes its turn into the city. The new station is being built by the Marshfield Oil Co., whose expansion the past summer has been large, they having two stations now in the city of Owen.
85 Years Ago – October 17, 1940
A minority of the members of the Owen Commercial Club found an hour and a half’s time available last night and attended the meeting of the Commercial Club at which time the report of the Flood Control Committee was heard and the possibilities of securing an airport and a skating and sliding place for the winter months were considered.
75 Years Ago – October 19, 1950
A Halloween Dance is being sponsored by the Owen-Withee baseball club and will be held at the Merry Ol’ Gardens on Tuesday night, October 31. In addition to the dance a public auction will also be held at intermission time.
65 Years Ago – October 20, 1960
Confined to St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, where she is being treated for a broken neck is Mrs. Arthur Petke, who lives three miles south of Withee. She suffered the serious injury in an unfortunate accident that occurred while she and her husband were doing chores in the barn Sunday morning as she was struck on the head by a bale of hay which he was tossing down from the mow for feeding purposes.
Mrs. Eugene Purgett was presented with a pin denoting 50 years as a member of the Royal Neighbor Lodge recently. The presentation was made by Mrs. Frank Cieslik, Oracle of the Owen Lodge and witnessed by several friends.
55 Years Ago – October 15, 1970
A bridal shower was held at Maplehurst town hall on Saturday evening for Miss Barbara Halida who will become the bride of Don Cwikla on November 7.
Henry M. Wilczek, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Wilczek, Route 1, Withee has been promoted to sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.
45 Years Ago – October 16, 1980
State assembly Democratic candidate Stanley Lato and U.S. Congressman David Obey (D-WI) visited Owen on a day-long campaign caravan that included a full schedule of stops. The two were in Owen at about 3:00 Tuesday to meet with townspeople and children and answer questions.
35 Years Ago – October 18, 1990
The Parade of Floats trophy was won by the Withee Lions during the District Convention held in Abbotsford, September 29. The Withee Lions float was made by Jeff Frederickson around 20 years ago, out of papier mâché. The float was then taken to Thorp to be fiberglassed. The Withee Lions are proud of the fact their float is homemade and not done by professionals.
Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee was the scene of the September 8 wedding of Ellen Renae Heggemeier and Roger Lee Niemi.
The 11th Frame in Owen was the setting for the October 6 celebration of the 50th wedding anniversary of Melvin and Dorothy Jarchow.
25 Years Ago – October 18, 2000
Fifth graders at Owen-Withee planted a tree and placed a plaque in memory of their classmate, Jessica Porath who died this past summer in an accident. Jessica’s birthday would have been Friday, October 13. Elementary staff donated the tree.
Bears and Bells/Thimbles and Cardinals: All find a home at 512 W. North St., Owen. Litta Rowe is a heavy-duty collector. Her home, a showcase for cute and cuddly bears, colorful cardinals, tiny thimbles and tinkling bells.
15 Years Ago – October 20, 2010
A large crowd of state dignitaries or representatives of their offices, county board members, news media, city residents as well as residents from the surrounding towns, gathered just off of Cardinal Avenue Monday afternoon for the groundbreaking ceremonies for the Clark County Agribusiness Park.
Tyler Hanson, 14-years-old, shot his first bear on the morning of October 8, 2010. The bear weighed 467 pounds.
