Percy Clifton has opened a new barbershop in the old Gauger building on main street.

95 Years Ago – October 23, 1930

The small safe of the Owen High School, containing about twenty dollars in money, some valuable records and a half dozen class rings, was blown open by safe crackers early Tuesday morning, and the contents of the safe removed. The work was not that of professionals, but is believed to have been done by some amateur workmen.

Joseph Katara, an inmate of the Clark County Asylum, who escaped on September 13, from that institution, was found dead, October 13, about a half mile south of the asylum buildings, near the Popple River. The man it is believed had roamed about the country for two weeks, and was making his way back to the institution when he became ill of exhaustion and exposure, and died in the woods.

The marriage of Mr. Ted Roberson and Miss Mildred Weaver occurred at noon today, at the home of the brides’ sister, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth King, the ceremony being performed by Justice of the Peace R.C. Graham.

Henry Wollum, president and general manager of the Owen Canning Corporation, Owen, was elected a director of the Wisconsin State Chamber of Commerce at the mid-century meeting at Milwaukee October 24.

Hot on the trail of a suspect are the police officers of both Clark and Chippewa counties where cattle rustling has been going on for the past couple of weeks. First it was in Chippewa County that heifers were reported as being missing. Now, the operators have moved into this community making their week and activities profitable by getting three bulls from this community.

65 Years Ago – October 27, 1960

The public is cordially invited to view the modern new dairy plant recently built by Mauel’s Dairy of Owen. They will be host to the public at an open house scheduled for Sunday, October 30, from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m.

The two units of the Havenet Nursing Home at Owen will be open to the public at an “open house” program to be held on Sunday, October 30. Guides will welcome guests between the hours of 2 and 4 p.m.

Tomorrow, Friday, October 28, Mrs. E. Neff of Lone Oak will observe her 90th birthday anniversary.

Mr. Philip Meadows, president of the Board of Directors of the Victory Memorial Hospital in Stanley, WI announced today the appointment of Joseph J. Laskar to the office of hospital administrator.

Northland Foods Coop, Owen has submitted to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) a permit application including plans for a new whey dryer.

Joe’s Refrigeration is happy to finally be open for business at their new location between Owen and Withee on Highway X. They have planned to celebrate by having their Grand Opening Friday, October 26 and invite everyone to stop in and see their modern, spacious facility.

Walker Lee James Kalepp was born Monday, October 16, 2000, weighing 10 lbs. 4 oz., 21½ inches long. Parents are Doug Kalepp and Susan Lew.

A shed at the home of George and Alveda Cordwell, on County O south of Highway X, Withee, was destroyed by fire while the Cordwells were vacationing with relatives in Texas.

Jake Ovyn, 13, son of Billy and Tanya Ovyn, made a 100-yard shot to the neck of his first bear, which weighed 470 pounds.
