95 Years Ago – October 30, 1930
The Clark Community Club presents two home talent plays at the Owen High School gym, on Friday evening, November 7. Sponsored by St. Katherine’s Guild. Music by the Clark Orchestra and a jitney dance will follow the play.
The Fremont Hotel for the past week has been undergoing repairs, and the steel siding which has covered the building in years past has been removed, and the new slate siding put on in its place. This change is a noticeable improvement. Interior improvements are also being made, which will make the place modern in every respect.
85 Years Ago – October 31, 1940
Monday evening, October 28, the Eastern Star Chapter of Owen celebrated its ninth birthday by entertaining members from Abbotsford, Greenwood, Humbird, Loyal, Neillsville and Stanley chapters, totaling 88.
Neal Laine this last week improved the appearance of his business building on Central Avenue which houses the business establishments of Laine’s Barber Shop and Haaya’s grocery. Previously the front of the building was of regular siding painted white with a green trim. The new front is of fire proofed asbestos shingles of an oyster shell color.
75 Years Ago – November 2, 1950
The first step, or phase, of the city’s forthcoming sewage disposal plant is now underway as Monday contractors started the work of putting in the interceptors, catch basins and storm sewers, all of which are a part of the sewage plant project.
65 Years Ago – November 3, 1960
This community was stunned late Friday afternoon when word was received here of the death of Darrell Marrier, 32, which occurred in a plane crash at Ladysmith. Marrier’s death was instant.
Wednesday of last week Mrs. Donald Churkey and infant daughter, Diane Marie, returned home from St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield. The infant was born October 23 and weighed eight pounds and 12 ounces.
G.R. Scharer, Owen chiropractor, has made a commendable move in his effort to provide this community and an extended surrounding area improved chiropractic services. This is borne out in the completion of a beautiful new clinic building which he moved into a week ago and now invites the public to see at an “open house” program set for Sunday afternoon, November 6, between the hours of 2:00 and 4:00 o’clock.
55 Years Ago – October 29, 1970
The Clark County Choraliers, formerly the Homemakers Chorus, will present their third annual Fall Concert “Harvest Harmonies” at the Withee Grade School Gym on Sunday, November 8 at 2:30 p.m.
45 Years Ago – October 30, 1980
Effective October 31, 1980 at 5:00 p.m., the Owen-Withee Family Clinic will be offering 24-hour telephone service. For your medical care needs, calls to the Owen Clinic after office hours will be transferred to Dr. Hopkins of Victory Memorial Hospital.
St. Stanislaus Church in Lublin was the site of an August 16, 1980 wedding uniting Diane G. Jarocki and David M. Hietpas in holy matrimony.
35 Years Ago – November 1, 1990
Irene Lehnen has done her part in beautifying the city and after 35 years has closed the doors of Irene’s Owen Beauty Salon.
October 17, 1990 was Boss’ Day. For Boss’ Day, the Special Events Committee of the Action Club decided to surprise Mr. Feldman by decorating his office. They put up banners, balloons and they made a big card that many people signed.
25 Years Ago – November 1, 2000
Not since the 1960s has a Small Cloverbelt football team accomplished a THREEPEAT conference championship. The Owen-Withee Blackhawks can claim that honor with the completion of a 6-1 conference record.
Russell Goessl ran a super race at the State Cross Country meet this past Saturday. It was one of his best races of the year, as he placed 15th out of the 130 runners.
15 Years Ago – November 3, 2010
It was called “Save St. Hedwig’s” and a “fundraiser for St. Hedwigs” but signs said “Welcome to Bernie’s Bash.” The fundraiser was the brainchild of Bernie and Delores Frankewicz, who are huge advocates of saving St. Hedwig’s Church. Bernie and Delores went ahead and shared their ideas with Scott, Deb, Darryl and Chauncey Marrier of the Hands Foundation and their ideas turned into the extravaganza that happened on Saturday.
It’s been 20 years of trick-or-treat at Owen-Withee’s Community Halloween Party, and Joan Frost and Carole Buss have spearheaded this October event through these two decades.
