95 Years Ago – November 13, 1930
During Sunday night or early Monday morning, burglars again made their entrance into the store of the Withee Hardware & Implement Co., to make a large haul. On this visit they gained their entrance by prying open a rear window of the store building. On this visit they secured all the knives in the showcase, all the rifles and shotguns in the case, a large quantity of ammunition, clocks and watches, razors and then carried off the typewriter in the office. An attempt was made to open the safe, but in this they failed, and the only damage done was to break off the dial.
The new Thorp fire station and jail building, 40x46 feet in size, under construction during the past two months, has been completed by the contractors, the Acker Construction Co. of Owen. One half of the floor space is used for the storage of a hook and ladder truck and hose cart. The other half is partitioned off and contains a large room supplied with two roomy steel cells. In the north front portion of the building is located the council room for use of the board, clerk, police chief and justice of the peace. The total cost of the building was $7,461.20.

In a ceremony performed at Woodstock, IL, Miss Lily Cass of Highland Park, IL, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cass of Owen became the bride of Arne Laakso of Waukegan, IL, son of Mr. and Mrs. Salmon Laakso of Owen, Saturday, November 9.
75 Years Ago – November 16, 1950
Francis Campbell, a hard and seasoned criminal is being held in the Clark County Jail by county authorities on a charge of stealing animals in the town of Longwood.
Within the past week, approximately 140 high school students took skin tests for tuberculosis. Each student received a notice stating whether their test was negative or positive.
The largest shelf cheese curing and aging building in the United States was recently completed by the Blue Moon Foods Inc. of Thorp.
65 Years Ago – November 10, 1960
Announcement was made yesterday of the appointment of Robert Tottier, Dorchester, as depot agent at the Soo Line depot here. He will succeed Gilbert Baker who retired after 50 years of service on the 14th of October.
55 Years Ago – November 12, 1970
Sunday, November 15, there will be a celebration of the 85th anniversary of St. Paul’s American Lutheran Church of Curtiss.
In order to save three times a week freight service to the inland Clark County cities of Greenwood and Loyal residents of the two communities are preparing to voice opposition to a Soo Line application to discontinue the service.
Capt. Robert Haselow has been transferred from Soc Trang, South Vietnam to the aviation base at Can Tho. Capt. Haselow is a flight surgeon at the base and has been in Vietnam since October 10.
45 Years Ago – November 13, 1980
Scaffolding was set up in front of the stained glass window at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee so that a plastic type storm window could be installed as part of the church’s weatherization project.
Missy Skrownek was the winner of the Supper Skate-A-Thon held at Whirl-A-Way Skateland in Owen on Saturday, November 1. She is the daughter of Dawn Skrownek who is the owner of the Lunch Box Café in Withee.
35 Years Ago – November 15, 1990
Paitel’s Citgo and Food Mart is celebrating six years in business during the month of November. Dave and Doris Paitel purchased the former Jasper’s Self Service Station from Bill Weinberger in April of 1984. Later that same year they added an additional thousand square feet to accommodate the new convenience store.
Denise Marie, daughter of Gerald and Mary Tomczak, Withee exchanged marriage vows with Russell Wayne Korenuk, son of Philip Korenuk, Gilman, and Bernice Korenuk, Gilman, on September 29, 1990 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.
The Owen-Withee Fire Department was called to an early morning blaze which destroyed the Withee Feed Mill, Sunday, November 11. The Department received the call at 4:00 a.m. and when they arrived on the scene, the building was totally engulfed in flames. They did, however, manage to save the office and warehouse.
25 Years Ago – November 15, 2000
The new IMC addition to the Owen-Withee High School, which is now a reality, held an open house last Thursday and Friday so area residents could see the finished product of the summer-long construction.
15 Years Ago – November 17, 2010
The House of Friends after school program planted daffodil bulbs at the Withee and Owen signs. It is part of the Chamber of Commerce’s beautification program for spring. They had asked for donations of daffodils and ended up with over 400 bulbs.
Dawn and Jeff Hill, CreekSide, were honored by Cenex because of their location by the creek, the beauty of the setting and the store itself, as well as their community mindedness.
