95 Years Ago – December 4, 1930
L.J. Doucette, recently of Tomahawk, has been appointed resident manager of the local telephone exchange and began his duties some days ago.
An overheated chimney is said to have caused the fire which destroyed the creamery, residence, and grocery store of Mike Teclaw, which was located four miles north of Thorp, destroying property valued at $20,000 which was partially covered by insurance. The blaze destroyed all of the creamery equipment, a stock of groceries, the credit account, and everything from the home except a washing machine.
85 Years Ago – December 5, 1940
Beginning on December 9, Miss Ruth Weiss, graduate dental hygienist from Marquette University, will be working in the Clark County schools on a dental educational program sponsored by the Clark County Dental Association. The purpose of this program is to give the teachers some help on the teaching of dental hygiene and to stimulate the children’s and parents’ interest in sound, healthy, clean teeth.
William C. Hansen, formerly of Withee and brother of Peter and Viggo Hansen of Withee, Saturday assumed his new duties as president of Stevens Point Teachers College at Stevens Point.
The railway crossings on 5th Street and Highway 29 were the scenes of two accidents when the passenger train from Chicago struck a milk truck Sunday noon on the 5th Street crossing, and when a freight train struck a car on the Highway 29 crossing, at 1:30 a.m. Monday.
75 Years Ago – December 7, 1950
Taxpayers in the city of Owen will feel much better about receiving their tax notices than they did a year ago. Reason being that the city’s tax rate is $7.30 lower this year than it was a year ago when the taxpayers paid $40 per thousand. This year the rate, as approved at the last meeting of the Common Council is $32.70 per thousand.
About 40 men and ladies of the Danish Lutheran Church went to Rochester, MN Wednesday to the Mayo Clinic where they all donated blood for the blood bank. They motored to Chippewa Falls where they chartered a bus for the trip.
65 Years Ago – December 8, 1960
Work has begun on razing one of the oldest industrial landmarks in the city of Owen. Monday a crew began the task of tearing down the old plant of the Frederick Post Manufacturing Corporation. Fortunately for the community the firm has enjoyed a healthy and continuous business expansion which has grown beyond the facilities of their old quarters. The result was the construction of a fine new plant to the immediate north of the old structure. Now all but the heating plant and dry kiln will be demolished.
55 Years Ago – December 3, 1970
A funeral Mass and burial was held Monday morning, November 30 at Lake Worth, FL, for Dr. George LeGault, former Owen physician and surgeon.
45 Years Ago – December 4, 1980
Remember Pearl Harbor? On December 7, 1941 Pearl Harbor was bombed. Many men originally from Owen still remember that date…they were there. In all 14 young men from the Owen area were in or near Pearl Harbor when it was attacked. Ed Klug and Bob Cattanach were wounded.
Mr. and Mrs. Leon Bruchert, Withee, announce the engagement of their daughter LeAnn Marie, to Mr. Douglas B. Stein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Stein Sr., Port Edwards. A 1982 wedding is being planned.
35 Years Ago – December 6, 1990
Badger Valve found themselves outgrowing the building in Withee and have just recently moved the operation to the Walt Klay building in Owen. The new facility needed to be remodeled and modified to fit their needs as it had been a body shop before.
In a Clark County case of sexual assault last week, a jury found Leon F. Bruchert, 65, Withee, guilty of fourth-degree sexual assault and attempted third degree sexual assault.
25 Years Ago – December 6, 2000
Sandra Fritz has been selected as a recipient of the National Educational Support Personnel Award in Central Wisconsin. This award is especially notable because Ms. Fritz was nominated by her colleagues.
A daughter, Rachel Lily Valentine, was born, Saturday, November 25, 2000 to LeAnne Schindler and her husband Jamie Valentine. Grandparents are Don and Theresa Schindler of Owen and Dick and Dee Valentine of Madison.
15 Years Ago – December 8, 2010
Community Bank of Central Wisconsin’s customers and employees donated $301.62 and 293 food items to local food pantries during its “Ultimate Deposit” food campaign. The Owen office raised $42.28 and collected 26 food items.
