85 Years Ago – December 19, 1940
The Owen Red Birds basketball club, under the management of Foster Will, this year boasts the strongest line-up ever to represent the city.
The month of November was the coldest in history and up to this time we already have more snow than we have had for the past four winters. The most recent storm that settled in on us Friday night and continued through Sunday blanketed the countryside with a layer of snow 14 inches deep.
75 Years Ago – December21, 1950
Fr. Raymond Bornbach performed the marriage ceremony uniting Miss Charlotte Scherf, daughter of Mrs. Fred Scherf, Withee and Peter Devine, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Devine, Jr., Withee, on Friday, December 15.
Ted’s Lunch ad: We couldn’t find a Christmas tree in the woods the other day, but as we were walking past a weeping willow it sobbed out, “If you will spruce me up a little, I’ll pine and pine until it makes me balsam.” Merry Christmas!
65 Years Ago – December 23, 1960
Sunday forenoon break-ins were reported at the Silver Dollar, a supper club, southeast of Thorp. Later in the day another report was received at the Sheriff’s Office of a similar break-in at the Hardware Specialty at Withee. They were similar in that the manner of entry was identical in both instances.
Army Pvt. James B. Lulloff, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard F. Lulloff, route 2, Owen, is participating with other personnel from the 101st Airborne Division’s 506th Infantry in a special STRAC (Strategic Air Command) alert at Fort Campbell, KY.
55 Years Ago – December 17, 1970
Mr. and Mrs. Gerald T. Miller are rejoicing over the adoption of a son, David Thomas, age four months, who arrived at their home on Tuesday, December 15.
45 Years Ago – December 18, 1980
Owen area’s new Surge Dealer, Del Lussenden, is stressing service as his most important product as he takes over the Surge equipment dealership here.
Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Jarocki, Route 1, Withee, announce the engagement of their daughter, Shelli Ann to Mr. Robert William Graham of Loyal.

Curtiss Lions recently contributed $500 towards a defibrillator for the Owen-Withee Volunteer Ambulance Service.
25 Years Ago – December 20, 2000
Not only are the students for the birds, but for all wildlife in the school forest. The students trek to the school forest carrying garlands of popcorn and cranberries, handfuls of bread crumbs, apples, oranges, bird seed, and peanut butter encrusted pine cones, treats for the wildlife in the forest.
15 Years Ago – December 22, 2010
Because of the severity of the recent winter storm, the Owen Common Council voted unanimously to suspend temporarily the snow shoveling ordinance that requires residents to avoid shoveling snow into “public streets, alleys, sidewalks or public lands.” Enforcement of the ordinance will be suspended for the 2010 and 2011 winter season.
Wednesday afternoon, 20 Thrivent members gathered at Owen Senior Center with Christian charity in mind to pack 110 food boxes to be delivered to the homebound in northern Clark County.
