95 Years Ago – January 1, 1931

The annual alumni banquet and dance given by the alumni association of the Owen High School took place Monday evening, the banquet being attended by about 50.

85 Years Ago – January 2, 1941

D.F. Britton, the eldest man residing in the city of Owen, Tuesday observed his 92nd birthday anniversary. Mr. Britton is as active as many men are at the young age of 60, his only handicap being that his eyesight is failing him.

Mrs. James Nelson is in the Legault Hospital being treated for burns of both hands and about the head and face, which she sustained in her home Sunday forenoon. The accident happened when she threw hot grease into the furnace and the blast of flames jumped back at her.

The interior of Sully’s Curve Inn, just east of the Owen city limits, has been recently painted, and the fixtures rearranged, making it more pleasant for those who visit this tavern.

75 Years Ago – January 4, 1951

Friday afternoon James Deucker, assistant general manager of the Master Package Corporation, submitted his resignation to Mr. W.J. Mahoney, general manager. Mr. Deucker is leaving Owen and his position at the Master Package Corporation, which he has held for the past four years, to return to his native home of Kiel, WI.

65 Years Ago – January 5, 1961

Dr. H.M. Braswell Jr., who has practiced medicine in Owen since August 6, 1956, announced this week that he intends to give up his practice here within the next four to six months. During that period of time, he is hopeful of disposing of his properties in the community and will thereafter practice either in Arkansas or Louisiana.

55 Years Ago – January 7, 1971

From a group of Owen-Withee High School juniors and seniors Janet Looker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Looker, has been selected as a candidate for the Americans Abroad Program.

Ron Poppe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Poppe, Withee, several months ago enlisted in the U.S. Navy and Sunday he left for the Great Lakes Naval Training Station at Great Lakes, IL.

45 Years Ago – January 1, 1981

Fourth and Fifth Street residents of Owen were without water for 5 to 6 hours on Monday, December 29 due to a break in the line running east-west on the south side of Fourth Street.

Owen-Withee Motors, Inc. in Withee has extended to add a showroom for new Ford autos. Owners Jim and C.O. Albert bought the old Hansen Mercantile next door to their business in October and began their remodeling project, with Hatlestad doing the construction work. They knocked through the walls of their own and the Mercantile building and added a portion to connect the two.

35 Years Ago – January 3, 1991

Three young women from the Owen-Withee area were all home for Christmas with their families but left on Thursday, December 27 for Fort McCoy and from there will be shipped to Saudi Arabia. Spec. 4 Lisa Miller, Spec. 4 Amy Anderson and PFC Becky Pries are all members of units which will be deployed for Operation Desert Shield.

Air Force Capt. Paul J. Pabich, a space surveillance operations crew commander, has arrived for duty at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey.

Patricia Marie Nowobielski, Thorp, and Duane Edward Jarocki, Withee, were united in marriage on November 10, 1990 at Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lublin.

25 Years Ago – January 3, 2001

Meadowview Golf Course Restaurant and Bar has a new manager. Ray Luzinski of Thorp assumed the managerial position on November 1. Luzinski worked at Meadowview as grounds supervisor this past spring and summer.

Four little buildings were recently completed around Owen that control, measure and pump the water from the area wells to the new Owen water tower. The largest of the buildings is located underneath the old water tower. This is the booster pump station. The meter station is a smaller version and sits close by Withee Oil on Highway X. There is a valve station fronting the Golf Course, finally a very small pump station behind Mauel’s Dairy.

As of January 1, 2001, Maurina Funeral Service, Inc. of Abbotsford, Dorchester and Owen, and Community Funeral Homes of Colby and Spencer, have merged.

15 Years Ago – January 5, 2011

The tenants of Poplar Apartments and several guests enjoyed a Christmas supper on December 21. The supper was hosted by Marge Rohland, who is an Interfaith Caregiver Volunteer for Rose Skinner.
