95 Years Ago – February 26, 1931
I. Peven, recently of Chicago, last week purchased the Owen Store, formerly the Owen Fair Store. Mr. Peven comes here as an experienced merchant.
The Golden Crust Bakery, under ownership of P.W. Clifton, is preparing its store building for the arrival of a large shipment of groceries, which will be handled at that place within the next few days.
The Northland Greyhound Lines, Inc., will start a daily bus service tomorrow from Minneapolis to Chicago through this city.
The business place of John Laneville at Withee was the scene of a daring hold-up Monday evening at about 9:30 o’clock when two masked men entered the place and forced John Laneville, proprietor and Harry Thorson, owner of the Withee Meat Market, to “stick them up,” while they went through their pockets and obtained all the money they found on them.
Fire of undetermined origin was discovered in the store of the Withee Hardware & Implement Co., at Withee Friday morning of last week shortly after 2:15, which caused the complete loss of the large two-story frame building, and the greater part of the contents.
85 Years Ago – February 27, 1941
Interest has been shown in the work of the National Defense Schools the last few weeks and some progress toward securing such a school for Withee has been made. All the young men of the ages 17-24 that are interested or would like to know more about this work are asked to attend a meeting at the Withee High School on Monday evening, March 3.
75 Years Ago – March 1, 1951
A two-day Grand Opening will be observed this weekend by the Looker Radio and Appliance store which recently moved from their previous location on Fifth Street to the Jens Miller building on the corner of Fourth Street and Central Avenue.
65 Years Ago – March 2, 1961
Dr. John Peden, who visited this community Wednesday through Friday of last week, Tuesday telephoned L.E. Bulgrin, director of the Owen Development Corporation and announced his intentions of succeeding Dr. H.M. Braswell at the Owen Medical Clinic.
Drs. R.E. Arneson and A.A. Jarvis, veterinarians, had to do a cesarean operation on a 1,400 lb. cow to remove a 249 lb. calf that was dead. The calf is one of the largest ever reported in these parts.
Mr. and Mrs. Foster Will, Owen, announced the engagement of their daughter, Charlotte Dee, to John Allen Rineck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Rineck Sr., Chippewa Falls. A fall wedding is being planned.
55 Years Ago – March 4, 1971
Wells F. Harvey, 92, publisher of the Clark County Press, at Neillsville, for more than 32 years, died Thursday afternoon, February 25, at the Bay Point Medical Center in St. Petersburg, FL.
Jerald Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jens Miller, Owen, was one of three persons that survived a plane crash Friday afternoon that took the life of the fourth passenger.
Earl Baumgardner, superintendent of Owen-Withee Public Schools since July 1, 1968, has informed the board of education of his intention to resign effective June 30, 1971.
45 Years Ago – February 26, 1981
Several Withee area collectors of depression glass will be displaying a variety of pieces at the Withee Public Library on Friday, February 27. The display will feature Black Amethyst Glass.
35 Years Ago – February 28, 1991
City police officers from Owen-Withee, Greenwood, Loyal, Neillsville and Marshfield met at the Greenwood Police Department on Monday, February 25. At the meeting they displayed stolen merchandise valued at $8,000 which was only a small portion of the $18,000 to $21,000 worth of items they have confiscated. Officers from the surrounding cities had been noticing similar thefts which have been occurring since as far back as September of 1990. The officers pooled information and came up with a number of suspects.

Jack Jalling, owner of the O-W Foodliner presented a gift certificate to Marian Ammentorp, winner in the IGA’s 20th Anniversary trivia contest.
15 Years Ago – March 2, 2011
On Saturday morning, February 28, 2011, at approximately 1:30 a.m. two male suspects were observed breaking into the Cozy Corner Café in Owen by the Owen Police Department. Upon further investigation it was found that the same two suspects had burglarized Badger Ag Solutions in Owen earlier on Friday evening before burglarizing the Cozy Corner Café.
