95 Years Ago – March 5, 1931

Veterans of the World War residing in Owen and vicinity will be enabled to borrow about $75,000 through the passage by Congress of the last Veterans Act.

Fire broke out at 5:30 o’clock on Monday morning in the Meat Market of Harry Jens of Curtiss, which completely destroyed the entire building and its contents. The efforts of the Curtiss Fire Department were spent in trying to save the meat market building but the flames soon spread to the building just south owned by B.B. Green and this was soon in flames. An appeal for help was made to the Dorchester Fire Department, but before their arrival both buildings were in ashes.

85 Years Ago – March 6, 1941

The Owen Beauty Shop which for the past two and a half years has been owned and operated by Mrs. Samuel Bertrand, was recently sold and the new owner took possession of the business Monday. Miss Helen Zinalt of Eau Claire is the new owner and comes to Owen with a fine background of experience and training in beauty culture work.

75 Years Ago – March 8, 1951

W.H. Conrad, publisher of the Star News at Medford, met instant death when he apparently fell asleep at the wheel of his car and crashed into a culvert early this morning. He had been a visitor at the Owen Enterprise office in the afternoon and had dinner here last night. It was about 1 a.m. when he left the city on his fatal trip.

Arthur S. Kenney, 41, cashier of the Peoples Exchange Bank, Thorp, will face preliminary examination March 14 in federal court at Eau Claire on a charge of making false entries in the bank’s book.

65 Years Ago – March 9, 1961

A new beauty shop in Owen will be owned and under the management of two former beauticians who have practiced their profession here previously—Mrs. Lucille Marsh, now of Chippewa Falls and Mrs. Irene Lehnen, Owen. Opening date will be announced as soon as equipment arrives and the interior of the quarters formerly occupied by the Owen Beauty Shop in the basement of the Woodland Hotel have been completely redecorated.

The selection of James Riley, 33, rural Owen, as rural carrier on route 2, Owen, was announced Friday.

Mr. and Mrs. H.B. Mauel Sr. celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on Sunday March 5, when they entertained at Smorgasbord at the Woodland Hotel.

55 Years Ago – March 11, 1971

The Girl Scouts of Troop 251 and their leaders enjoyed an outing on Squirrel Hill on Sunday, March 7, in honor of Girl Scout Week.

45 Years Ago – March 5, 1981

Lori Poppe and Brian Gehrke exchanged wedding vows at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Withee on January 24, 1981 at 3:00 p.m.

35 Years Ago – March 7, 1991

Gerald Nelson presented a check for $250 to Terry Laube on behalf of the Withee Lions in their continued support of youth in the area. The money will be used to purchase needed weight room equipment.

25 Years Ago – March 7, 2001

Jennifer German, Owen, was involved in a car/train accident Tuesday morning, March 6. The train struck the rear driver’s side of the German car, totaling it. German had to be extricated from the vehicle by the Owen-Withee Fire Department. She was treated at St. Joseph’s Hospital for minor injuries and released the same day.

15 Years Ago – March 9, 2011

On Thursday, March 3, 2011 the Owen Police Department, assisted by the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, responded to two burglary complaints in Withee at Rondi’s Country Café and Withee Oil Company.

Visitors to Owen over the weekend were treated to a marvelous quilt show put on by the Friends of the Old School. However, amid the very many beautiful quilts, one stood above. The Supper Quilt, made by Don Locke of Waxahatchie, Texas, was on display thanks to the generosity of area businesses and individuals who sponsored it.
