95 Years Ago – August 6, 1931
The Soo Line “scoot” which has run from Abbotsford to Owen for many years, was discontinued Monday. In the last few years, the “scoot” carried most of the passengers and the freight on the branch line. A new combination train, operating from Athens, terminal of the old Abbotsford and North Eastern Railroad through Abbotsford and Curtiss to Owen will serve the line.
The Owen Fruit and Vegetable Market, located in the Elliot building, has had the interior of their store neatly re-decorated. New shelving has been added and a full line of groceries will now be carried. The store will be known as the Owen Fruit, Vegetable and Grocery Market.
85 Years Ago – August 7, 1941
A business transaction was completed Wednesday morning at which time Johnson’s grocery store on Highway 29 was sold to Messrs. Roy Clark and Harold Parker.
Representatives and authorities of the Wisconsin State Health Department are in the city this week making an extensive investigation of the sewage drainage of the city. The present investigation is being made because of several complaints that have been made to the city and State Health Department of a putrid odor emitting from some unknown source.
75 Years Ago – August 9, 1951
Each year the local FFA Chapter picks an outstanding farmer in the community to represent them at the State Fair. This year the honors go to Mr. John Potocnik.
Miss Alvera Jasmer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Jasmer, Withee, became the bride of Alden Anderson, Marshfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Anderson of Owen during a ceremony performed at 2:30 o’clock Saturday afternoon in the Lutheran church in Withee.
Sunday evening Mr. and Mrs. W.K. Doonan returned to their home in the city. They had left the city about a month ago for a vacation at their lake property near Cable, but during that time Mrs. Doonan became quite ill and was hospitalized at Ashland. She stood the trip home Sunday quite well but will be confined to her home and bed for some time yet.
65 Years Ago – August 10, 1961
Five juveniles were placed on probation and three northern Clark County men are being held in the Clark County jail following thefts of items from a tool shed at the Clark County gravel pit in the town of Hixon Friday night.
55 Years Ago – August 12, 1971
The Miru Supper Club, a popular eating place in the area for many years, has been sold to David Stenstrom and will reopen for business serving steaks, chicken, and seafoods after the 1st of September.
45 Years Ago – August 6, 1981
On Monday, August 3, the last board was taken down, and the Bee Hive Schoolhouse went the way of many other rural one-room schools in Wisconsin. It exists now only in the memories of students and teachers who attended the school in the town of Green Grove.
Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Steiner of Route 1, Withee, announce the engagement of their daughter Anne Louise, to Daniel George Weibel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Isador Weibel, La Crosse. A September 26 wedding at the United Methodist Church in Withee is being planned.
35 Years Ago – August 8, 1991
Esther Sorensen greeted friends and relatives Saturday, July 27, when her children Sid and Shirley hosted a party in honor of her 90th birthday.
Jane Petersen, clerk at the Withee Post Office, was presented with a cake last Friday, August 2, in honor of her retirement. The cake was a replica of an envelope with an 8¢ stamp and cancellation mark dated July 17, 1971.
25 Years Ago – August 8, 2001
Water levels rose at the Mill Pond after a torrential downpour which dropped upwards of 5-6 inches of rain on the area.
Recently area resident Leona Himes presented the Withee Library with a necklace that originally was given to her mother by a neighboring Native American family.
15 Years Ago – August 10, 2011
At its regular meeting on Tuesday, July 26, the Owen Common Council discussed the possible purchase of two parcels of land from OMI property owner Marvin Matejka and potential options for applying for grants to clean up the property, which has contaminated soil and asbestos issues. The city is offering Matejka $310,000 for the contaminated 24-acre parcel and $66,000 for the vacant 22-acre parcel. However, there are several contingencies attached to the offer.
Kristie Isenberger and Joel Peterson announce their engagement. An August 27 wedding at Paradise Shores in Holcombe is planned.
