95 Years Ago – August 20, 1931
The Peoples State Bank and the Farmers Exchange Bank at Thorp have decided to surrender their respective charters and merge their interest in one new bank. The new bank will start with a capital of $50,000.
Virgil Tach, former Owen man, was arrested late last week by Sheriff William Bradford and arraigned before Justice Arthur Dudley Saturday at Neillsville, on a charge of abandonment of his wife and minor children.
85 Years Ago – August 21, 1941
With the lack of rains throughout the past several weeks an acute water shortage in Owen is now prevalent. The shortage is considerably noticeable to the city’s industries whereas the homeowners and housewives have not felt the shortage to any great degree.
75 Years Ago – August 23, 1951
It maybe happens every day—youngsters playing with matches—but twice within the past two days youngsters of six and seven years of age have been caught in the act. Their would-be playful acts became evident when the Owen fire company was summoned to a garage to the east of the Gummerson Implement Company late Tuesday afternoon.
65 Years Ago – August 24, 1961
Guests attending the annual Golfer’s Jamboree to be staged at the Meadowview Country Club Sunday, August 27, will have an opportunity to view the splendid and spacious facilities now afforded club members with the near-completion of the new club house.
Grave concern is held for the condition of George Gardner, Northern States lineman, Owen, who is hospitalized at Luther Hospital, Eau Claire. Gardner, a resident of Owen, suffered third degree burns about the upper portion of his back and forearms when he accidentally brushed against an energized line of 12,000 volts while working on an unenergized line running parallel to it.
Miss Ruth M. Smigay, Thorp, became the wife of Marvin Ammentorp, Withee, in a double ring ceremony at 11 a.m. on August 5 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church at Thorp.
55 Years Ago – August 26, 1971
Miss Nancy Jean Brossow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Brossow has taken a position as receptionist-secretary for Congressman Robert Kastenmeir, 2nd District Wisconsin, in Washington D.C.
At Monday night’s meeting of the Owen Common Council Edward Lehnen, former Third Ward Alderman, was appointed to the office of mayor to fill the unexpired term of Lyle Haas.
45 Years Ago – August 20, 1981
Rabies has been identified in the Longwood area. Eugene Himes’ beagle hound was bitten by a fox that Himes suspected of having rabies. He shot the fox and called Dairyland Animal Clinic who sent the head to Madison to verify. The fox did have rabies. Himes’ dog had had a rabies vaccination, however, was revaccinated and is expected to be okay.
On Saturday, August 8, 1981, the children of Harley and Agnes Herington celebrated the 40th wedding anniversary of their parents with a dinner and open house held at the Meadowview Country Club, Owen.
35 Years Ago – August 22, 1991
Paul Sjoberg, DVM from Dairyland Animal Clinic, Owen, was commissioned as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force, Monday, August 12; Capt. Sjoberg is scheduled to attend a two-week orientation course (Military Indoctrination for Medical Service Officers) at Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls, TX.
Kari Herington and Michael Johnson exchanged marriage vows at 2 p.m. July 20, 1991 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Withee.
25 Years Ago – August 22, 2001
CreekSide Convenience LLC on County Highway X located in the center of Owen opened on Wednesday, August 1. CreekSide is owned and managed by Jeff and Dawn Hill.

Clark County Circuit Court Judge Jon Counsell has announced the appointment of Heather Bravener to the position of Clerk of Court for Clark County. Bravener has been the Chief Deputy Clerk for eight years and has worked in the Clerk of Court’s office for a total of 11 years.
