95 Years Ago – September 24, 1931
A meeting will be held in the assembly room of the Owen High School Wednesday evening, September 30, at 8 o’clock for the purpose of discussing the organization of a Parent-Teacher Association.
Trygve Jahr, 62, died at the Legault Hospital Thursday evening of last week, after he had been a patient there for about an hour. He was brought to the hospital in a serious condition, and seemed to be suffering with fits, which it was believed was caused by poisoning.
85 Years Ago – September 25, 1941
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Finnish Lutheran Church for Emil Haaya, 58, retired Owen businessman who accidentally lost his life while hunting on the Felix Sapetta farm seven miles north of the city last Sunday.
75 Years Ago – September 27, 1951
By action taken by the Owen Board of Education at its meeting Friday afternoon it was unanimously voted to delay the start of construction of the new $160,000 addition to the Owen school system until next spring.
Raymond Shortell, 18, of Withee and Rudolph Gal, 24, Racine escaped a week ago tonight from the state reformatory at Green Bay by sawing their way to the top of the roof and escaped by sliding to the ground on a rope made of canvas strips torn from bean sacks.
65 Years Ago – September 28, 1961
Nearing completion is one of the two bridges spanning the Popple River to the south of the city on the new Highway 29. This particular span being built by the L.G. Arnold Co., Eau Claire, spans the Popple on the portion of the river running south from the mill pond. Work on the second span, to the east, isn’t as progressed.
55 Years Ago – September 30, 1971
Heavy fire loss was realized by Emory Maninen early Tuesday morning when the large barn on his farm was destroyed as were eight calves and more than 8,000 bales of hay, straw and a manure spreader.
At a joint meeting of the Clark-Marathon Postmasters, and postal employees and friends, Harold A. Wendt was honored at a belated retirement party Sunday evening. The dinner and party were held at the Trianon Ballroom, at which time Mr. Wendt was presented with gifts from his former fellow workers and the Postmasters of Clark and Marathon counties.
45 Years Ago – September 24, 1981
The Withee Village Board signed a one-year contract with the City of Owen for Owen to pick up Withee garbage.
Navy Yeoman 3rd Class Jeffrey A. Litten, son of Esther L. Salzgeber of Route 1, Withee, recently visited three Japanese posts during an 18-day goodwill tour.
Early Monday evening the Owen Fire Department put a torch to what remained of the house on the corner of S. Harding and Bjornstad. It had been razed the day before. The house was one of those originally built by the John S. Owen Lumber Co. to provide homes for employees at the mill. Gene Sutter says that his father, William Sutter, had a room there when he first came to Owen in 1895.

25 Years Ago – September 26, 2001
The Owen-Withee Lions recently donated the use of an Aladdin TeleSensory Reader that enlarges print up to three inches in size. The background can also be changed from white to black to make reading clearer. A moveable cart allows the Reader to be moved from room to room for residents to use at the Clark County Health Care Center.
Triplet calves were born Friday, September 14, 2001 at the Henry and Ardith Fischer and Paul, Sara, and Matthew Fischer farm, located in rural Withee. There is one heifer and two bulls. The odds of having triplet calves are one in 100,000.
A crew of about 10 men spent a couple days taking down the 70’x20’ silo at the former Liepke farm. The staves, bands, unloader, and outside ladder were then loaded on to flatbed trucks and taken to Ivan Nolt’s farm.

On Friday, September 23, 2011, at about 11:50 p.m., the Owen Police Department, assisted by the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, responded to a complaint of a stabbing that took place outside at the Trackside Bar at 614 N. Division Steet in Withee.
On September 2, 2011, at Allenton, WI, Bob Olejniczak along with five other concertina players, were inducted into the World Concertina Hall of Fame. Bob was self-taught and plays by ear.
