At the annual school meeting held Monday it was voted to raise $45,000 for a new school building.

95 Years Ago – July 11, 1929

Bids for the erection of a new school building in the town of Hixon will be let at noon Saturday, the new school to be situated in the southwest corner of section 24, township 29, range 2 west. The building will be 32x40 in size, and will be ready for occupancy at the beginning of school in September.

The Owen Tire & Repair Shop was the scene of another robbery on Saturday of last week, when thieves forced their entrance into the building through a rear window, securing four tires from the stock on hand.

85 Years Ago – July 13, 1939

A summons was served on Mayor K.L. Matthewson today, with the City of Owen, a municipal corporation, as defendant, and Dr. G.A. Legault, plaintiff, demanding payment of a doctor and hospital bill in the amount of $609.75.

Earl Baehr, 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. George Baehr, who reside on route 1, Withee, in the town of Hixon, suffered a depressed fracture to the skull when he accidentally tripped the carriage holding the hay fork from the top of the hay barn dropping the hay fork which struck him on the head.

This week a new aid to paint customers and to the public as a whole was installed in the local Gamble Store by manager, E.R. Haselow, with the installation of a new Red Devil Paint Conditioner.

75 Years Ago – July 14, 1949

The total assessed valuation of the City of Owen is up this year $56,545 above the valuation figure of a year ago. The total of last year was $1,896,455 as compared with this year’s figure of $1,953,000.

65 Years Ago – July 9, 1959

During the summer months Dr. R.E. Arneson, veterinarian, is being assisted in his duties by Robert Kovatch, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Kovatch, route 1, Owen. Robert is in his senior year of study at the veterinary college at Michigan State University.

Henry V. Anderson was honored at a party given by the Frederick Post Manufacturing Corporation of Owen, recently at the Miru, in observance of his 65th birthday anniversary and retirement from the firm.

55 Years Ago – July 10, 1969

Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Tony Ciokiewicz were at La Crosse at their son’s home where they spent a very nice day celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.

A 30-year-old Colby man who walked away from the Clark County Hospital in Owen Monday is being held today by Marshfield police on a charge of attempted armed robbery. Police said Paul F. Aumann will be arraigned in Wood County Court at Wisconsin Rapids today.

45 Years Ago – July 11, 1979

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Hiebsch, Owen, celebrated the 50th anniversary of their wedding Saturday evening at Marshfield’s Holiday Inn with a party hosted by their children.

Cecil Looker, a pioneer resident and farmer of Hixon Township, died Saturday evening, July 7, 1979 at the age of 85 at the Clark County Health Care Center.

35 Years Ago – July 13, 1989

Heil Grohn Co., general contractors for the new Owen Library, was busy the past two weeks pouring cement in the foundation. That is now completed and the sand fill laid from wall to wall.

On Sunday, June 25, Hilda Awe, celebrated her 90th  birthday with 65 friends and relatives at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Longwood.

Kristine Lynn Kaduce was born on June 30, 1989, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, to Kevin Kaduce and Jodi Hatlestad. Baby Kristine weighed 7 lbs. 12½ oz. and was 20½ inches long.

25 Years Ago – July 14, 1999

Gene and Carolyn Zawadzki of Owen celebrated their 40th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday, June 5. A reception and dinner were held at the Meadowview Golf Course in Owen, followed by a Polka Mass at Holy Rosary. The Zawadzkis renewed their vows during the Mass.

On June 25 the Badger State Games, martial arts competition was held in Madison. David Sleznikow, Withee, won a silver medal in the teenage Black Belt sparring division.

On Tuesday afternoon Owen’s City Crew put up the newly arrived Blackhawk street banners. Michael Ojanpera, O-W School’s elementary art teacher designed the banner, did the hand lettering and picked the colors, which were then silk screened.

15 Years Ago – July 15, 2009

An American flag flown over Iraq during a combat mission by F-16 pilot Captain Jon Rubin of the Michigan Air National Guard, 107th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron on April 15, 2004, now graces the front of the Withee Post Office.
