95 Years Ago – July 25, 1929

Representatives of Clark and Taylor County banks held a meeting here on Thursday evening of last week at the community  hall, at which there were about 50% represented and resolutions were adopted for organizing and arming three individuals in each city and village in both counties, who, when a robbery of a bank, store or any business place occurs, will take up pursuit of the robbers.

85 Years Ago – July 27, 1939

A distinguished figure and name among golfers is that of Walter Hagen and a rare occasion it is to have such an individual frequent the premises of Meadowview Country Club. However such was the case on Tuesday afternoon when Mr. Hagen who was enroute to St. Paul to compete in the Keller open tournament, which opens tomorrow.

75 Years Ago – July 28, 1949

Little six year old Philip Siudak, the chap that lost his feet in a haying accident at his farm home near Lublin three weeks ago, is a wonderful example of what courage and optimism will do for a person. Philip, now up and about attended the benefit baseball game played here Tuesday night at the Owen Ball Park between teams from Lublin and Bellinger. All of the proceeds are going to the trust fund being set up in his behalf.

65 Years Ago – July 23, 1959

A 16-year-old Withee youth was revived by artificial respiration after being recovered from the water at Mondeaux Dam in Taylor County Sunday afternoon. Arthur Petke, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Petke, route 1, Withee, nearly drowned while swimming with a group of friends while attending a picnic of the Walther League church group from St. John’s Lutheran Church, Withee.

55 Years Ago – July 24, 1969

A one thirty dinner was served to about 50 relatives and friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Haire in Minneapolis on Sunday, July 13, honoring the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Rol Haire.

45 Years Ago – July 25, 1979

The new Owen Park concession stand is now completed. The building will serve both as a food and beer concession stand during the annual Owen Junior Fair, and for other events during the summer.

Saturday, July 28, 1979 will be the last official day of business for Andy Smith at Andy’s Standard Station on Highway X in Owen. The building where he has operated his business for the last 10 years has been sold to Time Federal Savings and Loan of Medford.

Mary Ellen Hughes, who graduated as a lawyer in June from the University of Wisconsin Madison, enlisted in the Navy as a lawyer and left last Monday for her training base at Newport, Rhode Island. She will be in for three years and later stationed in California.

35 Years Ago – July 27, 1989

Andrea Lynn Stock and Scott Allan Richards were married at 3 p.m. July 1, 1989 in St. Katherine’s Episcopal Church, Owen.

25 Years Ago – July 28, 1999

Lara Herington and Luke Johnson exchanged marriage vows at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 12, 1999, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Withee.

15 Years Ago – July 29, 2009

Central Wisconsin truckers gathered at Owen’s Mill Pond Park on Saturday at noon to honor all servicemen and women, both past and present. As the afternoon events paid tribute to veterans, also included was a gift to The Highground at Neillsville.
