It was a cold April day, with above average turnout in Owen-Withee.
Taking to the polls April 1, voters turned out to elect a state superintendent, Supreme Court judge, local judges, a host of local government officials, and approved a referendum to change the state constitution on voter ID.
“I think we had a bigger turnout this time,” Owen City Clerk Tracy Rau said. “It was almost as big as the presidential election.” All told, Rau said 300 ballots had been cast at Owen, with mayor and council on the ballot this year.
Withee Village Clerk Ellen Niemi reported a similar large turnout compared to last spring.
“Last year’s spring election was 108 voters,” she said, with this year’s seeing 177 ballots cast. No local races were contested at Owen or Withee, results for municipal races below.
As for contested state races, Owen voters supported Brittany Kinser with 150 votes to 134 for incumbent Jill Underly. The vote was a reverse outcome of the state total, State Superintendent Jill Underly winning reelection to a second term statewide.
For Supreme Court, Owen voters supported Brad Schimel with 152 votes across all three wards, while challenger Susan Crawford received 148 votes, also a reversal of the statewide outcome. District 4 Court of Appeals candidate Jennifer Nashold received 219 votes in Owen, running uncontested. On the state constitutional referendum question, 216 voted ‘yes’ while 81 voted ‘no,’ mirroring the state result.
At the Village of Withee, voters likewise supported Kinser with 104 votes to 66 for incumbent Jill Underly. For Supreme Court, Withee voters supported Schimel with 104 votes, while challenger Susan Crawford received 72 votes. Nashold received 152 votes. On the state constitutional referendum question, 146 of Withee voters voted ‘yes’ while 28 voted ‘no,’
As for the city of Thorp, voters supported Kinser with 281 votes to 202 for Underly. For Supreme Court, Thorp voters supported Schimel with 311 votes, Crawford receiving 209 votes. Nashold received 381 votes for District 4 Court of Appeals. On the state constitutional referendum question at Thorp, 386 voted ‘yes’ while 120 voted ‘no,’
Countywide in Clark the returns for state superintendent showed 6,139 votes for Kinser to 3,613 for Underly with write-in Adrianne Melby receiving five votes, while State Supreme Court saw a vote of 6,639 for Schimel to 3,815 for Crawford. Nashold received a total of 7,599 votes countywide for District 4 Court of Appeals, while the state constitutional referendum on voter ID saw 8,013 vote in favor with 2,218 against.
Crossing the county line into Taylor, voters chose Kinser over Underly for state superintendent by a vote of 4,532 to 2,367, with Melby receiving 10 votes. State Supreme Court saw Taylor County support Schimel over Crawford with 5,264 votes to 2,176, there being zero write-ins.
For voter ID, the countywide numbers at Taylor were 5,977 in favor and 1,364 against.
Vote totals were not broken down by municipality for Taylor County on the county website.
As for races at Owen, city returns show Scott Jalling with 270 votes for mayor, while Kenneth Martine received 115 votes for Ward 1 Alderperson, Pamela Jaffke 79 votes for Ward 2 Alderperson, and John Mauel 64 votes for WArd 3 Alderperson.
At Withee the returns show Larry Klabon with 164 votes for village president to four scattering while Nancy Amacher received 171 votes, with zero write-ins.
As for Owen-Withee School Board, returns districtwide show Adam Simington with 928 votes and Julie Wendler with 1,614, there being zero write-ins.
As for Thorp School Board, returns show Lana Ciolkosz with 842 votes, Jason Maier with 582, Kari Bielecki with 372, and Angela Hertz with 222 votes.
For Gilman school board, districtwide returns show Lynn Rosemeyer with 877 votes, Derrick Romig with 532 votes, Holly S. Bacha with 630 votes, Vonda Kinas with 315 votes, and Josh Mann with 635 votes, there being zero write-ins.
At Greenwood School Board, returns show Jamie Gardner with 984 votes, Shawn Kolano with 592 votes, and Jessica Wolf with 453 votes. Separate advisory referenda to combine the Greenwood and Loyal school districts saw 1,616 vote in favor and 618 against, posed in similar questions to both districts. Greenwood saw a vote of 856 in favor and 760 against, while Loyal saw a vote of 235 in favor and 383 against. The referenda results are non-binding, being advisory.
In village returns elsewhere, Gilman voters reelected incumbent Jane DeStaercke over challenger Jerry Smith, DeStaercke polling 83 votes to 68 for Smith.
In Trustee returns, results show Russell Baker with 108 votes, Mark Person with 114, Karen James with 101, and Derrick J. Romig with 68, with zero write-in votes.
At Lublin, incumbent Randy Madlon defeated challenger Todd Benkowski for the village presidency, Madlon polling 40 votes to 22 for Benkowski.
As for Lublin Trustee, returns show Christine Nowak filling the seat of Father Hermann Klarr, who declined candidacy in January. Incumbent Christine Compagnone won reelection to the other open seat. Village returns show Nowak with 43 votes, Compagnone with 46, Richard Pulcher with 15 and Frenchy Lehouillier with 16, there being zero write-ins.
As for the city of Greenwood, returns show Mitch Behrens with 187 votes in Ward 1 and Dean Hinker with 149 votes in Ward 2
Returns at the city of Thorp shows Brian Abramczak with 143 votes for Ward 3 Alderperson to 5 write-ins, Josh Rosemeyer with 76 votes for Ward 4 Alderperson to one write-in, and Rodney Enkers with 403 votes for Alderperson at Large to nine write-ins.
Township races are as follows:
At Aurora: Brian Phelps with 126 votes for Chairperson; Earl Hinkel with 108 votes for Supervisor and Benjamin Bolstad with 117, with zero write-ins.
At Cleveland: Scott Capelle with 110 votes for Chairperson; Vince Anglemyer with 101 votes and Norman Mudgett with 103 for Supervisor; Joseph Liegl with 114 votes for Clerk; and Tammy Wojcik with 115 votes for Treasurer, and zero write-ins.
At Ford: Scott Nichols with 106 votes for Chairperson; Leonard Nichols with 84 votes and Davey Winger with 91 for Supervisor; and Kimberly Meyer with 98 for Clerk, with zero write-ins.
At Maplehurst: Mark Nosko with 132 votes for Chairperson; Tony Friedenfels with 112 votes and Andy N. Friedenfels with 102 votes for Supervisor; Marilyn Ovyn with 133 votes for Treasurer; and Michael D. Barna with 126 votes for Assessor
At Longwood: Art Petke Jr. with 140 votes for Chairman to three write-ins; Jeff Rasmussen with 137 votes for Supervisor 1 to two write-ins; Travis Greshcner with 140 votes for Supervisor 2 to zero write-ins.
At Loyal: Jesse Zvolena with 171 votes for Chairman to one write-in; Ray Weyer with 156 votes and Kevin Froeba with 174 votes for Supervisor at Large; Denise Witte with 206 votes for Treasurer; and Lacii Kautzer with 205 votes for Clerk, with zero write-ins.
At Reseburg: Michael J. Lewien with 119 votes for Chairman; Matt Grajkowski with 114 votes for Supervisor 1; Roger Vetterkind with 118 votes for Supervisor 2; Lore Nowobielski with 118 votes for Treasurer; and Jacqueline Vetterkind with 119 votes for Clerk, with zero write-ins.

At Withee: Joe Waichulis Jr. with 184 votes for Chairman, Al Marek with 191 votes for Supervisor 1; George Jarocki with 192 votes for Supervisor 2; Virginia Kodl with 197 votes for Treasurer; and Sue Boehlke with 196 votes for Clerk.
