Friends of the Old School celebrated America in song

As a kick-off to the fair, Friends of the Old School held an America Sings Sing-Along at the Old School gym on Thursday, September 10.

The evening began with Reveille played by Phil Greschner and ended with Taps played by Riley Dieball and the singing of God Bless the USA.

Everyone was welcomed to the event and the Star Spangled Banner was sung. Local talent performed a few numbers beginning with the Sillampa family singing There’s a Meetin’ Here Tonight, Side by Side, and the Battle Hymn of the Republic. Patricia Steiner sang songs from West Side Story, including Tonight and Somewhere. She then performed America as a duet with Phil Greschner. Cynthia Gutsch accompanied them on keyboard.

Alex Kulesa played God Bless America on the concertina and Old Black Joe on the harmonica. China Barker then performed America the Beautiful on the kazoo. About 20 kazoos were handed out and she gave a lesson on how to play the kazoo saying you just sing into the instrument.

An Ecumenical Choir from various churches then performed Go Down Moses, Sweet and Low, Pick a Bale of Cotton, Steal Away, and I Ain’t Gonna Study War No More.

There was one Sing Along request from the audience and voices were joined in singing This Land is Your Land
