It was a bright and shiny grand opening for Mabel’s Parlour last Friday afternoon, October 18, 2024. Stylist and business owner, Addie Paskert was joined by many friends, family and the ribbon cutting crew including Clark County Economic Development Corporation (CCEDC) Director Sheila Nyberg, Clark County Supervisor Jill Hoff, CCEDC member Nancy Amacher, Thorp Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Member Kyle Auger and Thorp Mayor Rich Wnek.
CCEDC Director Nyberg stepped up first to welcome visitors and congratulate Addie on her new business endeavor. She then introduced Mayor Wnek who shared these words of encouragement,
“It's October 18, and it's a beautiful day out here today. The biggest thing about it is, I know there's a lot of work going into opening this shop up. There's a lot of family helping. There's a lot of individual people who probably helped you out. And seeing the showing of the people that are here today, I can tell you that you got a lot of backing. This is probably one of the biggest ribbon cuttings that I had to do since we started them. I'm glad that you picked the community of Thorp, being that you grew up in Thorp, you decided you wanted to venture out in the city. And thank you very much for picking the city of Thorp to be your home for your new salon.”
After also hearing well wishes from Jill Hoff, Nancy Amacher and Kyle Auger, Paskert had a chance to introduce herself and explain the inspiration behind the shop name.
“I just want to say thank you to everybody who's here today. My mom and dad have been a big support in my life, and I couldn't be here without them, my aunts and uncles and my cousins and everybody, my boyfriend and his family, everybody, thank you very much. I appreciate you all being here, and I'm looking forward to more years.
“I think everybody here knows why I named it Mabel’s Parlour, my great-grandmother on my mom's side. Her name was Mabel, and she was very warm and welcoming. I was just talking to my aunt about it today, and she said she would give you the last cent in her wallet. She would give you the shirt right off her back. And she was just a very wonderful lady. And the definition of parlour is a warm gathering area for socializing so – Mabel’s Parlour.”
Earlier, Paskert said she decided to start her shop after seeing an opportunity on Facebook and touring the location the same day. She thought it was a great fit and began renting the space from the owners of Aroma Café, John and Lana Ciolkosz. This downtown space was previously occupied by another stylist, Laura Lenzen.
Paskert offers hair, nail, face and eyelash services and is open five to six days a week depending on her schedule. Mabel’s Parlour is located at 225 N. Washington St., Thorp. For an appointment call 715-773-2771.
