The Stanley Area Historical Society will be having a presentation on an event that goes back to September 1918, when a Clark County family near Withee was besieged on their farm by a posse of over a hundred local residents in a shootout that lasted approximately eight hours. Why did it happen? The Krueger family was seen as "strange" and extravagant in their lifestyle. Their home had electricity, an indoor bathroom and a dumb waiter in a day when few farms had them. Today, the house still stands along Hwy 73 south of Withee. Caroline, the mother, stirred up resentment by claiming the Pope had started the war and that this was the Apocalypse and no soldier who went to fight would survive. With two sons eligible for the war draft and notified to report for induction, neither showed up. A son has a run in with the town "train station master" and when a large crate arrives for the son, it was confiscated and the sheriff was informed. The sheriff opens it and found guns and ammunition. The local paper published an inflammatory article on the family intentions and that the family had draft dodgers. Soon Federal officials from La Crosse had deputies sent to arrest the draft dodgers. Town volunteers were recruited to help arrest the draft dodgers. What happened next? Mark your calendar and come to the Stanley Area Historical Society on Sunday, August 16 at 1:30 p.m. to hear the, "Whole Story," and there's much more! Colby historian Lee Kaschinska will be the presenter. A free will offering will be taken up to help defray the expenses.
