Mr. Gary Lindgren, Mr. Lance Batchelor, Mr. Mark Nosko, Mrs. Heidi Bower, Mr. Mike Kessling, Mr. Aaron Ruggles and Mr. Noel Barteck, all Wisconsin DNR Certified Hunter Safety Instructors invite all young people interested in hunting and recreational shooting to enroll in a Wisconsin Hunter Education course. These instructors will be assisted by Junior Instructor Easton Ruggles.
The course will be held at the Owen-Withee High School beginning on May 22, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. At least one parent is required to attend the first class to complete paperwork and sign the necessary forms. Textbooks will also be distributed at this meeting. The remainder of the classes will be meeting on June 18 through June 24, from 6:00 to 9:00. Weather permitting, target shooting will take place on Saturday, June 21 from 8:00 a.m. until done (usually around 11:00). Sponsors of the class include the Owen-Withee Public Schools, the Lublin American Legion Post, and the Owen-Withee Police Department.
Students will need to register for the class by logging into the WDNR Go Wild website. The student may also obtain a DNR Customer ID number on this site. A Customer ID number is required to register for the class. You can also get this number by calling 1-888-936-7463 between the hours of 7 a.m. and 10 p.m.
There is no minimum nor maximum age, and parents are also encouraged to enroll and participate.
Class size is limited to 30 students, and advance registrations are required. Please contact the Owen-Withee Public Schools 715-229-4488, 715-229-2151, or 715-229-2694 to enroll. The DNR has set a course fee of $10 which will be collected at the first class. All necessary materials are provided.
Persons successfully completing the course will receive a distinctive embroidered emblem and a hunter safety graduate certificate. The certificate is valid in lieu of a small game-hunting license for one season, and is a lifetime certificate required for hunting in many states and provinces. Young students certified will also be able to hunt and use firearms without a parent or guardian present at age 14 instead of age 16.
Classes will cover responsibilities of hunters, firearms safety in the home and in the field, knowledge of firearms and hunting equipment, marksmanship and outdoor skills.
