A homicide conviction in the killing of a Unity woman has been vacated by a Jackson County judge who determined that inadmissible hearsay was allowed at the 2022 trial of Jesus Contreras-Perez in Clark County. Contreras-Perez, 45, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Cassandra Ayon following a weeklong jury trial in June of 2022.
The AbbyColby Crossings Chamber of Commerce honored Kelly and Todd Schmidt with their Community Service Award at the chamber’s annual banquet held on March 13.

The School District of Thorp’s Board of Education met for its monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 19, to discuss filling several positions for the 2025-26 school year. Among those positions discussed was district superintendent, with the board making the decision to open the position up to qualified candidates. Interim superintendent Bob Houts, whose contract with the district ends this summer, was hopeful Thorp will begin to receive applications for superintendent by next month’s meeting.

Closed temporarily for remodel, the Stanley A&W is now reopened on South Broadway, as of March 26. Owned by Jerry and Dee Wells, the restaurant at 175 Pine Street in Stanley is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
On Monday, March 17, 2025, the Stanley Fire Department along with the Boyd-Edson-Delmar Fire Department had a joint training on Wild Land Fire Refresher hosted by the Stanley Fire Department.
Streets and Grounds Foreman Joe Schmitt expressed concerns to the council regarding the online reservation system for the seasonal Chapman Park campground. One major issue is that reservations must be made 10 days in advance and then staff must print and post the reservations on-site at specific times.
