The American Legion Post 73 will honor three local army veterans Tuesday, September 30. Three veterans, Dennis Schutte, Cary Kaczor and William “Bill” Debevec each served their country in various capacities in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Residents of the Colby School District may see an increase in their property taxes after the school board approved a proposed budget for the 2025-26 school year and a corresponding tax levy at its budget hearing and annual meeting on Monday. The proposed tax levy will reach nearly $5 million with a mill rate of $7.11 per thousand, a roughly 23.6% increase.
A substantial increase in anticipated state aid for the Abbotsford School District has presented the school board with a chance to either cut property taxes or pay off additional debt while keeping the levy steady and prevent future spikes.
A former Colby woman has been sentenced to five years in prison for child enticement after it was discovered in 2023 that she had been having sexual relations with a teenage student of hers at a private school in Abbotsford. Sally Jahnke, 46, was sentenced on September 9 after pleading guilty in July to felony child enticement with sexual contact and a fourth degree sexual assault, a misdemeanor.

The Indianhead Community Action Agency (ICAA), a charitable organization that works with local food pantries, announced it would no longer be able to provide aid and food relief to residents in Rusk and Taylor County as of October 1, 2025. The Thorp Community Food Bank, located at 116 North Washington Street in downtown Thorp, said it will help provide food relief to nearby Taylor County villages like Gilman and Lublin.
The city of Thorp’s fiberglass cows are a major tourist attraction, but Adri Turner and her sister Aslynn Turner, of Austin, Texas used the cows for a learning experience. The sister’s grandparents, Trina and Wade Turner of Onalaska, WI, used the cows to teach the girls how to use a map.
