The Chili-Fremont Fire and Rescue department was recently awarded a $5,000 grant from Nutella through a partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council. Chili-Fremont Fire and Rescue is one of five volunteer fire departments nationwide to be awarded the $5,000 grant from Nutella, which will be used to help fund essential department needs.

August 3, the Highground Veterans Memorial Park hosted Step of Faith, a non-profit organization devoted to providing service dogs from vetted breeders to veterans in need. The organization is non-breed specific, and works to obtain the specific breed seen as best-suited for each veteran’s individual needs.
Attorney Tim Jacobson of Fitzpatrick, Skemp and Butler, LLC in Onalaska, has been retained by dozens of citizens in the Town of Pine Valley (semi-rural Neillsville) for the purpose of stopping a proposed mine expansion that is surrounded by a large number of homes. This comes after two public local government meetings—the July 8 Neillsville Common Council and the July 21 Pine Valley Town Board—where a group of concerned community members voiced their objections to the proposed mining project.

After Dorchester’s bar owners voiced their concerns about new license fees, the village board decided to lower the amounts charged for alcohol licenses at its most recent meeting last Wednesday. The fees had seen significant increases from the year prior. Retail Class A and Class B liquor licenses were both $100 before the recent changes, but jumped up to $500 this year.
The Colby-Abby Police Commission on Monday approved a new two-year contract with the local police officers union that includes 2% pay increases every six months for the next two years. The police department’s proposed 2026 budget has not been finalized yet, but an increase of approximately 3.5% over this year is expected at this point.
The Colby City Council approved an application for a simplified rate case for the city’s water utilities that will allow for a 3 percent rate increase, pending the approval of the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin.

Thorp Police Chief Daryl Pries brought up several needs his department is facing at Thorp’s monthly city council meeting on Monday, August 11. Pries assumed full-time duties in early July, and he told the council its police department could use a new printer, along with new transportation.
Thorp High senior and FFA officer Blake Ciolkosz placed second out of 11 drivers at the FFA State Tractor Operators Contest last week. The contest took place at the 2025 Wisconsin Farm Technology Days, which was held on the grounds of Clinton Farms in Bear Creek, Wisconsin.
