A storm system rolled through central Wisconsin last Thursday afternoon, producing at least three confirmed tornadoes in Clark County and destroying several buildings. As of Tuesday, the National Weather Service of La Crosse had confirmed three tornadoes, an EF1 tornado near Christie, an EF0 tornado southwest of Loyal, and an EF2 tornado just south of Colby.

May 14, the Neillsville Optimist Club held its annual Respect for Law Award event at the Neillsville City Hall. The 2025 Respect for Law Award recipient was retired Clark County Sheriff Scott Haines, recognized for his commitment and dedication to the citizens of Clark County. Haines’ law enforcement career in Clark County spanned 30 years.
The Historic Woodland Hotel and the Owen-Withee Area Historical Society, Owen, will co-host the Clark County Historical Society’s spring meeting June 7, from noon to 2 p.m. The meeting will begin with a potluck lunch (entrée and beverages provided by the hosts) and salad and desserts brought by the attendees.

Filling an open teaching position at Colby High School became a contentious issue at Monday’s school board meeting after one of the applicants, a current district employee, raised the possibility that nepotism may have led to another applicant being chosen.
After three months of back-and-forth debates about what type of air packs to buy for local firefighters, members of the Central Fire and EMS board on Tuesday ended up voting exactly the same way they did back in February. By a vote of 4-3, the board reaffirmed its decision to purchase MSA-brand self-contained breathing apparatus from MacQueen Equipment for a total cost of $278,783. The big difference from February is that MacQueen agreed to sell the district 64 bottles to go with the 32 air packs and 60 facemasks included in the original offer.

The DNR Hunter Safety Program this past Saturday, took a new twist when Certified Hunter Safety Instructors from the Stanley Sportsman’s Club offered the opportunity for area students that took the hunter safety course online, to complete the safety course with hands-on field training.
