Owen-Withee Area History Series
Attracting and Retaining Industry and Jobs in West Central Wisconsin
One of the hats that I wear in Clark County is a member of the Digital Footprints Committee that falls under the Clark County Board. Consider that a cousin to local history. This is our mission:
In the heart of the Midwest, West Central Wisconsin represents a dynamic blend of opportunity, innovation, and community spirit. This nine-county region, encompassing cities such as Neillsville, Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Ladysmith, Hudson, Ellsworth, and Durand, is strategically located near the bustling Twin Cities of Minnesota. With a significantly lower cost of doing business, this area has positioned itself as an attractive destination for industries and job seekers alike. At the forefront of this effort is Momentum West Wisconsin, a regional economic development organization that leads collaborative strategies to grow the region’s economy.
Goals of Industry and Job Development
Momentum West operates with a clear mission: to advance economic development across the counties of Barron, Clark, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Pierce, Pepin, Polk, Rusk, and St. Croix. By fostering partnerships and leveraging resources, the organization aims to achieve several key objectives:
• Business Attraction: Position the region as a preferred destination for new businesses by highlighting its strategic location, affordable costs, and high quality of life.
• Business Retention and Expansion: Support existing industries in scaling and sustaining operations through resources, workforce solutions, and infrastructure investments.
• Workforce Development: Build a skilled and adaptable workforce to meet the demands of modern industries, including advanced manufacturing, technology, and healthcare.
• Digital Integration: Enhance the online presence of the region through initiatives such as Clark County’s “Digital Footprints” project, which seeks to unify and strengthen the county’s digital visibility.
Benefits of Economic Growth
Investing in the attraction and retention of businesses brings numerous benefits to West Central Wisconsin:
• Job Creation: New industries and the expansion of existing businesses create employment opportunities, reducing unemployment and boosting household incomes.
• Community Vibrancy: A thriving business ecosystem supports local services, schools, and cultural institutions, enriching the quality of life for residents.
• Regional Competitiveness: The collaborative efforts led by Momentum West enhance the region’s ability to compete with larger metropolitan areas such as the Twin Cities.
• Economic Stability: Diversifying the industrial base mitigates economic risks and fosters resilience during market fluctuations.
Challenges to Overcome
Despite its many strengths, attracting and retaining industry and jobs in West Central Wisconsin is not without challenges. Some of the key obstacles include:
• Workforce Shortages: Like many regions, West Central Wisconsin faces difficulties in attracting and retaining a skilled workforce, particularly in specialized fields.
• Infrastructure Limitations: While strategically located, some areas may require upgrades to transportation, broadband, and utilities to fully support industrial growth.
• Rural Perceptions: Overcoming the perception of rural areas as less desirable for business and talent requires targeted marketing and storytelling about the region’s advantages.
• Balancing Growth with Sustainability: Managing development in a way that preserves the natural beauty and resources of the region is essential to maintaining its appeal.
The Role of Collaboration
Momentum West’s motto, “Moving Forward Together,” underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing these challenges and achieving shared goals. Organizations such as Clark County Economic Development and Tourism, led by Sheila Nyberg, play a critical role in ensuring that local efforts align with the broader regional strategy. Projects like the “Digital Footprints” initiative demonstrate the power of coordinated action, as counties work together to enhance their collective online presence and reach global audiences.
A Vision for the Future
The future of West Central Wisconsin is bright, buoyed by a strong commitment to collaboration, innovation, and economic growth. By attracting new industries, supporting local businesses, and creating a welcoming environment for talent, the region is poised to thrive in the competitive landscape of the 21st century. With Momentum West leading the charge and communities rallying behind shared goals, West Central Wisconsin is not just a place to live and work—it is a place to prosper.
