Over the past few weeks, there have been a lot of "health and wellness" articles in the news. It has struck me how many of them have the same message: Want to improve your health? Go outside. Get in touch with nature. Go to an event like a play, a concert, a function of some sort. Have plants in your workspace, or in the house. Go for a walk outside. Go for a walk in the woods. Go be with people, even if you just stand around and talk for 10 minutes. Lay on the floor for a few minutes, and practice mindfulness and relaxation.
You know, it seems a great many of our health professionals who are speaking with the media are saying a lot of the same things...There is more and more mounting medical research to connect all these things listed above to decreased blood pressure, chance of heart attack and stroke, risk of diabetes, overall better health and well-being, and more. It really makes me stop and wonder how much we don't really know and what we don't really understand about health, medicine, and mental wellbeing.
Reality being what it is, a lot of us wrestle with the necessities of work and responsibility versus the time to spend outside in enough quantity to make a positive impact. As with many things, it's a case of doing the right things that actually increases your productivity and abilities to function! And the people who share that who are surprised to find this out are many and growing! I guess it's just a good reminder that we do know a lot of the right things to do for our health and wellbeing...Maybe it's time to remember to put it into use more often, so we can enjoy the rewards?
