95 Years Ago – January 29, 1931
Workers at the John S. Owen Lumber Co. sawmill are putting in considerable overtime in taking care of the large amount of timber that is being hauled here. More than two million feet of logs have been cut within a radius of 30 miles of Owen and hauled here by trucks.
85 Years Ago – January 30, 1941
Sunday, January 26, Fr. Charles Brady arranged a most successful celebration of the burning of the note of the Holy Rosary Parish of Owen.
Mrs. Caroline Krueger, 79, a resident of this community for the past 60 years passed away at her farm home two miles south of Withee on January 23. She is survived by her three sons, Frank, Leslie, and Louis, all of whom are at home.
75 Years Ago – February 1, 1951
The arrival of a new Snow Blower, a unit for removing snow from the city’s streets is expected sometime tomorrow or Saturday.
65 Years Ago – February 2, 1961
Area residents will be sorry to read that it was necessary to amputate Ralph Peterson’s right leg above the knee yesterday morning. The surgery was performed at St. Joseph’s Hospital at Marshfield where he has been a medical and surgical patient since a week ago Saturday when his right leg and arm were badly smashed in a logging accident.
Eugene Petruzates, Thorp, was fined $100 and costs in Judge Lowell D. Schoengarth’s court at Neillsville, January 23, after being charged with furnishing beer to minors in the Town of Withee January 18.
55 Years Ago – February 4, 1971
More than 50 people gathered at the Meadowview County Club Saturday night to pay their respects to Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Mills, who were honored at a farewell party.
45 Years Ago – January 29, 1981
Last week was the final week of the Five Star Bowling Tournament and Luella Mueller, Withee distinguished herself winning the Women’s 5 Star Championship for the third year. She also won this distinction in 1976 and 1977.
The Amish schoolhouse west of Withee was a total loss after a fire raged through the trailer in which the school was housed Monday night. The building had only been occupied for a couple years, and firemen speculate that the fire began with the woodstove but could not determine for sure the origin of the fire because the damage was so extensive.
35 Years Ago – January 31, 1991
The fire departments of Curtiss and Owen-Withee met Monday, January 21 at the Curtiss Fire Hall. The meeting was in regards to Curtiss merging with Owen-Withee for fire protection.
The Withee Lions idea of putting a new floor in the Withee Gym has now become a reality. Dave Smith Carpentry started tearing up some of the ‘really bad spots’ on Monday of this week. Greenwood Carpet Service will then lay tile. The project should be finished next week at a cost to the Lions of $6,500.
25 Years Ago – January 31, 2001
Community Insurance and Real Estate recently moved into spacious, ultra-modern offices on Main Street in Withee. The building contains a large reception area, four offices, conference and meeting room and kitchen facility.
A challenge is issued by St. Katherine’s Parish, Owen to the churches in the Eau Claire Diocese to match their $500 pledge to purchase three 30 second television commercials.
15 Years Ago – February 2, 2011
The Cozy Corner Café in Owen was the scene of yet another milestone birthday when the coffee group met to celebrate Otto Engel’s 90th birthday.
The Owen-Withee Girls Basketball Team beats Loyal 68-54, giving Coach Guthman his 600th career win.
