95 Years Ago – April 9, 1931
A. McAdam was taken ill with an attack of appendicitis Monday and underwent an operation at the Chippewa Falls hospital. Harry Thorson of Withee has charge of the meat market during Mr. McAdam’s absence.
85 Years Ago – April 10, 1941
The title of champ was bestowed upon Hank Lutz, senior in the Owen High School, who last week won the Ping Pong championship of the school by defeating Phil Hoeper in the finals.
Theodore Albert, for more than 20 years a hardware merchant in the Village of Withee, has sold his stock of hardware to the Hardware Specialty Co. of Withee.
75 Years Ago – April 12, 1951
The threat of another serious flood in the city of Owen alarmed the citizenry Friday and Saturday as mild weather coupled with two days of steady rain raised the waters of the Popple River and Brick Creek up and above their banks to flood stage.
65 Years Ago – April 13, 1961
One hundred and eight persons were served dinner a week ago last night when friends gathered at a farewell party given for Dr. and Mrs. H.M. Braswell at the Woodland Hotel.
55 Years Ago – April 15, 1971
Clark County Judge Richard F. Gaffney, 62, died yesterday morning, Wednesday, April 14, at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, where he had been a patient the past 10 days.
Mr. and Mrs. Leo Markowski announce the engagement of their daughter, Linda Carol, to John Barna, son of Mr. and Mrs. Atanas Barna, Withee. Wedding plans are indefinite.
45 Years Ago – April 9, 1981
Stop in and meet the gang at Del’s Surge in Owen during their grand opening. Del Lussenden moved his dealership into the old pea canning factor on Industrial Road in December. Since then the building has been remodeled, and the Surge people would like to introduce themselves.
Pre-trial and trial dates in the case of Richard L. Neff vs. the Owen-Withee School District were set in Clark County proceedings last week. Neff is the former principal of the O-W elementary schools and is seeking over $62,000 in back pay and benefits he claims are due him following his contract termination after a stroke in 1977.
35 Years Ago – April 11, 1991
For the second time since December, the Owen-Withee Fire Department was called to the Withee Feed Mill. In the early morning hours of April 8, the department received a call that the office and warehouse of the Withee Feed Mill was burning. Upon arrival they found the north half of the warehouse and the office engulfed in flames. The building is considered a total loss. Withee residents were awakened by what sounded like gunshots during the fire. Actually it was cases of aerosol fly bombs exploding.
25 Years Ago – April 11, 2001
All that remains of the former Paitel’s Citgo building on Highway X is the canopy. The former gas station/convenience store has been purchased by Jeff and Dawn Hill of Owen. The building was leveled as will the canopy soon be to make way for a new 3,050 square foot log store. The Hill’s hope to be opening the new convenience store July 1. The shed which stood behind Paitel’s has been donated to the city and is now sitting on the side of the skating rink. Plans are to use it as a warming shed for skaters and possibly utilize it in the summer at fair time.
15 Years Ago – April 13, 2011
A son, Clay Mikel was born to Geoff and Morgan Mueller, Owen at 1:34 p.m. on March 31, 2011, at Aspirus Hospital in Wausau. The baby boy weighed 8 lbs., 2.5 oz. and was 19.5 inches long.
Noel Barteck of the Owen-Withee Fire Department stopped by the Owen-Withee Junior/Senior Physical Education Class. Mr. Barteck’s visit wasn’t a social one—he was there to teach students about CPR and emergency response training through videos, stories, discussion, Q&A and hands-on practice on adult, child and infant mannequins.
