105 Years Ago – April 21, 1921
A deal was made Wednesday whereby the Service Garage, which has been under the management of Hansen & Larsen, was sold to Christensen & Bulgrin of Redville.
Ten thousand trout fry arrived today for the Owen Businessmen’s Club and were planted in the north fork of the Popple River.
Last Monday M. Dierzen sold his meat market at Withee to James Taylor and R. Replogle.
95 Years Ago – April 16, 1931
The Acker Construction Co. started work this week on the erection of a new oil service station which is being built on the old pickle station site across the street from the Owen Auto Co. The new station will be under the management of Stanley Michkowski and Kenneth Mathewson and International oil products will be handled.
The dance given at the Community Hall last Friday evening proved a decided success. The golf club realized more than $100 from the sale of tickets. This money will be used for building bunkers and sand traps at the course.
85 Years Ago – April 17, 1941
Last Saturday forenoon as George Krom and a party of young men were enroute to Thorp they escaped a serious mishap when a cheese box fell from the top of a load of an approaching truck and struck the Krom car breaking the windshield and scattering the glass. The box hit the windshield on the righthand side and glass struck Terry Doonan, an occupant of the car who was riding in the front seat, but did not harm him.
An illness which necessitated three months of hospitalization and since that time has confined John Laneville to his bed at his home for the past three and a half months proved fatal to him late this forenoon at his home. Mr. Laneville had been a resident of the village of Withee for the past 40 years and before that worked for the lumber company here in Owen.
75 Years Ago – April 19, 1951
This afternoon more than 100 friends and relatives are helping Mrs. Stena “P.K.” Peterson celebrate her 101st birthday anniversary. The celebration is being held at the Danish Assembly Hall in Withee. A big dinner is being served at two o’clock to all guests after which there will be a short program and visiting with many friends who are here especially for this event.
A proposal was thrown out to the Owen Kiwanis Club when they met Monday night to sponsor a Cub Scout group in this city. No action was taken on the matter at the meeting Monday but the subject will undoubtedly be brought up for consideration at one of the later meetings.
65 Years Ago – April 20, 1961
Nancy Potocnik and Carol Wagner have been named Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively, of the graduating class of 1961 at the Owen-Withee Senior High School.
55 Years Ago – April 22, 1971
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Arndt, route 1, Owen, announce the engagement of their daughter Diane Marie, to Mr. Ronald Eugene Anderson, route 2, Withee. Wedding plans are indefinite.
45 Years Ago – April 16, 1981
When Mike Kovatch, chairman of the town of Green Grove, led the town meeting last Wednesday, April 5, it was a special occasion. It was to be his last meeting as chairman after 32 years of service on the board.
Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Kluge of Monona announce the engagement of their daughter, Miss Yvonne Kluge, to Dale H. Laube, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Laube, Rt. 1, Owen. An October 17 wedding is being planned.
35 Years Ago – April 18, 1991
Students from O-W Elementary School sent letters to Capt. Paul Pabich, stationed in Turkey during Operation Desert Storm. Capt. Pabich surprised the four staff members with a package containing tee-shirts as a thank you gift for all of the letters and cards.
Hank and Amy Mauel, Owen, announce the engagement of their daughter Ann to Kevin Miner, son of Richard Miner and Patricia Gorney, Otter Lake, MI.
25 Years Ago – April 18, 2001
On Tuesday, April 10, 2001 the Clark County Sheriff’s Department received a call stating that two individuals were overdue and missing from a canoe trip down the Black River. At 7:59 p.m. Marshfield Spirit Air helicopter spotted Jeff Mengel of Withee and Lannie Tomczak, Curtiss, on a small island in the middle of the Black River. A boat from the Department of Natural Resources, operated by a DNR Warden and a Taylor County Deputy, were ultimately able to reach the individuals and remove them from the island, taking them upstream to an area where they could safety land the boat.
Tammy L. Kapfer and Erik J. Stinson announce their engagement. A July 14, 2001, wedding is planned.
15 Years Ago – April 20, 2011
The Owen Common council held a meeting to get public input and comments on the planned Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade but no one from the public attended. The purpose of the upgrade is to remove sludge from the treatment lagoons, replace the lagoon aeration equipment, construct an excess flow equalizations pond and add chemical feed equipment for phosphorus removal to meet DNR standards. The multimillion-dollar project will also repair or replace the existing influent bar rack and filter controls and programming, as well as add alarm functions, gear operators and containment pallets and replace effluent pumps to increase capacity. The cost of the project, with construction to begin in 2012 and completed in 2013, is $2.748 million.
