95 Years Ago – May 21, 1931
Jens Stigsen is nursing a cut above his right eye, which he received from a fall while in a fainting spell while working in his store on Thursday afternoon of last week. The cut came from his glasses being broken when he struck his head against the store counter.
85 Years Ago – May 22, 1941
Ray Conzemius, secretary of the Owen Businessmen’s Club, has announced that the business places of the City of Owen will be open until 10 a.m. Memorial Day, at which time they will lock their doors for the remainder of the holiday.
The condition of Joe Mertens, a young farmer residing south of Withee, who sustained serious external and internal injuries when run over by two or more cars and a truck on Highway 29, one mile west of Cadott Friday morning, is reported as being improved. The case itself is deeply involved in mystery and nothing definite as to how it happened or how Mertens was first struck or run over by a car is known.
75 Years Ago – May 24, 1951
Fire which evidently started from an overheated chimney in the attic of the two-story frame home on the farm of Allen (Happy) Stark six miles northwest of Owen destroyed the entire upper story of the home and did considerable damage to the remainder of the structure yesterday afternoon.
Carl M. Stenseth, 72, former businessman in this city for 23 years, was buried at Riverside Cemetery Wednesday afternoon.
Rinehart’s Jewelry will have a Grand Opening starting at 9 a.m. Friday, June 1, through Saturday, June 2.

The Frankewicz family, Withee, celebrated 24 years in business and the opening of their new office and store last Thursday and Friday. The business, Joe’s Refrigeration has recently been incorporated.

The Owen-Withee Elementary School celebrated their cumulative one million minutes of reading on Friday, May 17. Barbara Krehmeyer organized the day-long celebration to mark the achievement.
25 Years Ago – May 23, 2001
Cindy C. Frane, 21, a resident of Curtiss, was sentenced on Friday, May 11, 2001 in Clark County Circuit Court to 30 days in jail and three years probation for theft based on securities fraud. The Honorable Jon Counsell also ordered Frane to pay restitution in the amount of $25,000.

Two Owen-Withee High School musicians have been selected to be members of the 2011 Wisconsin High School State Honors Music Project. Allison Truman, a junior flute player, was selected to be a member of the State Honors Band, and Valerie Niemi, a junior alto, was selected to the State Honors Mixed Choir.
The Wisconsin School Music Association and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction recently announced the results of the 2011 Student Composition Project. Tim Gelhaus and Joerge Schmelzer, music students at Owen-Withee, each received Honorable Mention Awards for their compositions.
