Karl Kuss, Owen high school athletic coach for the past five years, is no longer coaching students and building character in the youths he worked with but is now being coached himself by Uncle Sam in his rapidly growing army.
75 Years Ago – June 21, 1951
Newell “Micky” Wilson successfully landed a 32-inch musky while fishing on Soo Lake near Phillips Sunday afternoon. The fish hit a surf-oreno.
65 Years Ago – June 22, 1961
Members of the Owen Masonic Lodge Monday night voted authorization to the board of trustees to proceed with plans for the construction of a new temple building. The 30x70 foot structure will be erected on a site directly across from Meadowview Country Club on the north side of Highway 29.
Tuesday morning officials at the Owen plant of Western Condensing Company learned of the nationwide reorganizational program put into effect by Foremost Dairies, Inc. E.J. Wendt, general manager of the firm’s operations in Owen, said the change would not affect personnel here.
Mr. and Mrs. John H. Lesneski of Withee, announce the engagement of their daughter, Mary Lorie, to Arlyn Mills, son of Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Mills of Owen. The wedding will take place in August.
55 Years Ago – June 24, 1971
This week Donald D. Schneider assumes his new duties as superintendent of the Owen-Withee School System.
Another of the old-time employees of the Master Package Corporation announced his retirement on June 1 when Walton “Shingles” Engebretson, called it quits after being with the firm since the 27th of December 1943. During that time, he had capably served as the warehouse clerk.

Miss Susan Ann Rohland, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rohland, route 2, Curtiss, was given in marriage by her parents to Ronald Metzner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Metzner of Green Bay, May 30.
After operating Gary and JoAnn’s bar for the past 12 years, Gary and JoAnn Lavin have sold their business to Lee and Connie Koplin. The couple and their son, Michael, age 6, plan to move to Las Vegas where Gary’s mother lives.
35 Years Ago – June 20, 1991
A surprise 80th birthday party was held for Dave McVey, Saturday, June 13. The party was hosted by Art and Verna Erickson and held at the Redville Store. Dave, who loves to play cribbage, was told to come down to the store for a cribbage game. Lots of friends and neighbors came to surprise him and was he surprised!
25 Years Ago – June 20, 2001
At least a dozen large pine trees went down in the grove of trees behind Scott and Deb Marrier’s home on Cty Hwy O, south and west of Withee, during Monday evening’s storm. The backyard swimming pool was still intact.

The family of Neil and Eileen Vater gathered for a picnic at Longwood Park on Sunday, June 12, to celebrate the couple’s 70th wedding anniversary.
Alyssa Fritz, Sacia Vieregge and Haley Ovyn had the time of their young lives as they had the opportunity to attend a Taylor Swift concert at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul recently. The lucky trio had an “in” as Alyssa’s uncle Jesse Lambright is Taylor Swift’s personal bodyguard.
CN Railroad is erecting a new communications tower at the north end of Central Avenue as part of a federal mandate requiring Positive Train Control systems. Positive Train Control systems are integrated command, control. communications and information systems for controlling train movements with safety, security, precision and efficiency.
The Owen-Withee Education Association recently held their teacher recognition dinner at Allison’s Steak House in Abbotsford. Ten individuals, representing 289 years of experience to the District will retire this spring. These retirees are Al Goerlitz-24 years, Linda Plautz-35 years, Russell “Doc” Hosler-20 years, Charlie Milliren-31 years, Bill Nyre-33 years, Sally Martine-32 years, Sandy Fritz-34 years, Mike Ojanpera-31 years, Al Guthman-35 years, and Scott Zoronmski-14 years.
