95 Years Ago –July 9, 1931
W.J. Mahoney, general manager of the Master Package Corporation, will leave Saturday evening for Chicago and
then go to Fort Sheridan, where he will be for the next 15 days in the Reserve Officers Training Camp. Mr. Mahoney
served as a Lieutenant in the World War.
85 Years Ago –July 10, 1941
Bright yellow markings are being painted on the surface of Central Avenue for the purpose of aiding motorists to
park their cars evenly on the street and diagonally to the curb.
Many youngsters of the city have found the Popple River an ideal swimming and wading place during these hot
summer days. Thus, to help ensure parents of their safety while at play at the beach in the city park the city this
week put a colorful yellow boom at the maximum depth of safety for youngsters.
75 Years Ago –July 12, 1951
Plans for the fourth annual Owen Junior Fair, which is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club and the Owen
Businessmen are being formulated for August 24, 25 and 26. The fair has been enlarged this year by the addition of
an extra day, plans to include rides and concessions, and free entertainment on Saturday and Sunday.
65 Years Ago –July 13, 1961
Wednesday of last week two youths from the Village of Withee appeared in juvenile court at Neillsville to answer
charges of stealing sizeable sums of money on three occasions from the Withee Drug Store.
The condition of Alfred Ciokiewicz, 24, who suffered compound fractures to his ankle, head
lacerations and back injuries in a plane crash last Thursday is said to be improved considerably today. Alfred is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Ciokiewicz, city.
55 Years Ago –July 15, 1971
The 12-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emory Maninen, who reside three miles north of Withee to the White
School and then one mile west, suffered a severe hip injury late Saturday afternoon. She was assisting in farm work
when the unit she was towing became clogged and as she stopped to make adjustments it moved forward down an
incline and ran over her foot causing extensive injury to her hip and pelvis.
Since the 26th of June the firm formerly known as Weinberger & Lindgren Inc., has been dissolved with the
purchase of Lindgren’s stock by Mr. Weinberger. Hereafter the firm will be known as William Weinberger Construction, Inc.
Miss Janet Looker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Looker, Withee, and an Owen-Withee High School student will
spend the next year in Belgium as an Americans Abroad Exchange Student.

On July 1 Larry and Sue Sholes took over ownership of the 11th Frame. The Sholes’ plan a few changes for the
Frame. They would like to start an afternoon bowling league.
Vita V. Draheim and David E. Gosse repeated wedding vows Saturday, July 4, 1981, at Our Savior’s Lutheran
Church in Greenwood.

The U.S. Bison Company has moved their office into the former Looker building on main street. The Earnest’s
will be moving more of their buffalo operation there in the near future. It will be used for a warehouse and not a
retail outlet for the meat.
Lynn and Nicole Shattuck of Curtiss are happy to announce the arrival of a baby daughter, Morgan Marie. Little
Morgan was born July 1, 1991 at 2:47 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield. She weighed 8 lbs. 7½ oz. and
was 19½ inches long.
25 Years Ago –July 11, 2001
Gertie Becker celebrated her 98th birthday on Friday with a party at the Clark County Health Care Center.
Olga Lozakovitch of Belarus, Marina Zapletina and Roman Magatin of South Russia, Catholic Youth Counselors,
along with Kit Gelhaus, spent the week of the Fourth at the home of Kit’s parents, Dr. Tom and Mary Gelhaus of
rural Owen.

an impressive ceremony Saturday afternoon as they dedicated the Poznan/St. Hedwig’s Historical Marker.
